You're on the right track, but it's more than that.

The extremists took the left over, and chased off everyone to the right of Eleanor Lamb. They did this through the usual cycle on almost every community they captured, and in a relatively short period of time (about 3-4 years), they overtook every major platform that the left held, and, subsequently, chased off everyone who was remotely sane or reasonable.

They pulled this coup off effectively enough, but when they locked down the communities they took over with their little ideological hugboxing, they also wound up with the terrifying realization that they'd driven off about 92% or so of the userbase - there's nothing Social Justice warriors hate like a Left-winger who won't fall in line. You didn't hear about most of this because they literally control the mainstream press and have massive influence on Social Media. Attempts to try to rally were immediately shut down, and we didn't really see any recovery at all until around 2013.

The long and short is that they've never had the numbers to push their shit. They have no mandate, facts aren't on their side, and popular opinion has been against them since this shit started, but they successfully intimidated a lot of people into shutting up with threats and abuse. That shit is starting to fail because everyone can now see that they never had even a shred of the power they claimed they did.

So now, you get to see something very rare, and to be treasured: People, regardless of political orientation, uniting to make fun of these fucks.

That's a pretty interesting model of how a internet cultures turn to shit, but I'd like to comment on a slight caveat. This actually occurs organically SJW's don't really plan to shit up the forums they join, it's just their nature ensures it will escalate to that point. They actually think the dumb shit they're doing improves things and don't really pre-meditate any of it.
I recall a right wing forum I used to visit got hollowed out by the opposite side, in fact the only ones who put up a fight to stop it was left/centre wing devils advocates/trolls, by the end of it all the site did was shit post about hillary clinton conspiracies and try to disprove global warming as the market crashed during the end of the Bush administration. This stuff has precident in history when groups become convinced of their own rightiousnesss. A lot internal religious/political struggle either boils down to the radicals taking control or the moderates trying to reign them in and then it all spiralling out of control.

Social Justice has a well-established history wherein media designed to appeal to it fails, miserably. There's a few reasons for this.

First and foremost: SJWs are not numerous. They are grossly outnumbered, and they know it. Community after community, compare a Social Justice hive to another community that isn't infested and the non-SJ site will have more traffic, more content, and generally be better. The easiest way to see this is to take a community dominated by Social Justice and check the status of its direct opposition; as an example, Gamerghazi has a userbase of over 12000 users. KotakuInAction, the GG subreddit, has a userbase well over 6 times its size.

The second reason is because media and communities that appeal to Social Justice tend to alienate everyone else. What's that? You disliked a movie because it made something shit out by Happy Madison look good in contrast? You fucking misogynist. You obviously hate women and also are a racist. On Social Media, they're no more elegant and pull the same shit. Bobby, give me a good example, if you'd kindly:

"Everyone who disagrees with me is the enemy" in four tweets. No one wants what Adolf Chipman is selling except the true believers, and Trump himself gets more likes and retweets from a single shitpost in an hour than Chipman will get in weeks.

The third, final, and frankly, fucking funniest reason is because they don't consume the media they advocate for. Because of these three reasons, going after them actively and expecting a profit is an economic death sentence and any company doing so deserves what it gets. Doesn't matter whether you're a hobby site or a major movie company; bank on Social Justice being a win for you, and you will lose.
