Gamergate was spun by Zoe Quinn's defenders as some vast conspiracy to harass women out of gaming, after Zoe Quinn's boyfriend revealed that he found out she'd cheated on him with a video games "journalist" in exchange for a favorable review of her shitty game Depression Quest. Reportedly "Gamergate" was also a code for harassing Anita Sarkeesian (who has no clue how vidja games work and even admitted in a candid video that she isn't a gamer and not a fan of gaming) and others in the IngSoc Justice crowd who called themselves "women in gaming". In reality it was all about outrage that a games journalist was bribed with pussy to give a good review of a shitty game, and wanted to put a stop to that bullshit. But oh no, MUH HARASSMUNT OF WHAMMEN IN GAMING!

I don't think there's any solid proof of "rape and death threats" against either Quinn or Sarkeesian or any of the others, though I'm sure someone messaged any of them with "LOL KYS" or something stupid like that. I'm not saying it didn't happen, just that it really didn't have anything to do with not wanting corruption in vidja game journalism, while the IngSoc Justice crowd just want to push an agenda and obscure the real issue, and idiot sponges like MovieBlob and Dobson swallow it hook, line, and sinker.

During this, one of their darlings got their sexual indiscretions exposed, and when the indie journo circuit tried to close ranks to protect one of their own, they got exposed as not only being in collusion but financially supporting the indie darling in question. The brainlets in the indie journo circuit doubled down once more, attacking their own audience and declaring that gaming hobbyists were over and should no longer be appealed to by developers, instead embracing identity politics. The gamer nerds in turn responded by calling out their shit, getting the FTC involved, conducting many boycotts, supporting numerous charity drives, and exposing many other examples of journalistic fraud and malfeasance. Enraged with their enemies getting the better of them, the indie journo circuit decided to push the narrative that allowing any discussion of GG at all was tantamount to enabling the harassment of women, evidence be damned.

Despite the full support of the indie and mainstream press, the indie journo circuit ultimately failed to stop GG in any meaningful capacity, and while they arguably won the PR war, the Autists won every other front. The hashtag wrapped up in October of 2015 after Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian's disastrous UN appearance obliterated any credibility they may have had.
