I once had a book that suggested that in a Superior Future human beings might no longer need clothes. All I can say is I am happy I live nowhere near Boston
From a pure SF perspective that isn't actually outside the realm of possibility. I mean, do Fallout Vault dwellers really need clothing, or is there climate control by and large? They wear clothing, thus the iconic jump suit, but if mankind had originated in that situation with environmental controls, would we wear clothing? Would body paint or tattoos have taken the place of clothing? Its a fascinating thought experiment. And it's especially interesting if you consider artificially created sentient biological life forms, gifted from inception with AC/Heating, would they need clothing if they lived inside all the time? It's a neat concept and one that might tip the hand of genetically engineered species verses an organically developed one. But that's about all it is. Still though it does have some limited validity.
It isn't realistic to imagine the USS Enterprise or even D's population/crew roaming about nude though. Their history, cultural never mind biological, alone suggests such an adaptation to be over the top.
