The others on the left, don’t want people like Bernie to engage them because they have severe hatred of the middle. They don’t want Bernie to try and find common ground because the only way is their way. Which is how a toddler sees the world.
It's also how an authoritarian sees the world, and the Social Justice movement is fundamentally authoritarian in character. But I don't think that the immaturity of this view is a coincidence; I suspect that we get an authoritarian when a person's growth is stunted in some specific way. There is a concept in neurological and psychological development known as the
critical period, where a certain neural system has a particular time in its growth when it can develop but only if it receives appropriate external stimulus. For example, animal experiments showed that animals temporarily deprived of vision when very young literally never learn how to see, and the visual cortex actually visibly withers. Even once the blinders are removed, the damage is irreversible. Likewise, feral children who didn't learn how to speak in infancy never learn more than the absolute barest rudimentary speech if taught later (a few words, no grammar). Another, more obscure example, is literacy: in the Middle Ages, only learned individuals learned to read, and they did so as adults. As a result, almost all of them had to read aloud like stupid children and were literally unable to read silently; being able to read silently was considered a rare gift! In the SocJus case, the relevant mental ability is critical thinking. When they insist that objectionable ideas have to be silenced to prevent them from becoming accepted, they are projecting their own inability to think critically onto others.
I really hope that I am wrong about this, because if I'm right, there is no cure for these people, just like how there is no cure for sociopathy or psychopathy. Yes, they can change
what they think, but changing
how they think is a different matter. Society still hasn't woken up to the fact that science shows that there are literally millions of people who are too harmful to allow in society and can't be reformed and therefore the only way forward is either mass incarceration or mass execution. And these people are more obviously harmful and incurable; if we can't deal with outright criminals, how can we move people to deal with more subtle threats? Authoritarians, regardless of ideology, need to be disenfranchised and kept away from any authority, especially any authority over children.
More research into authoritarianism is needed: What makes them? What are the relevant genetic factors? Are the relevant genes strictly harmful and in need of deletion, or can they also serve a more constructive purpose? Can authoritarians be cured? Can they be treated to be less harmful, such as with drugs for example? What are the best ways to manipulate them? Are there any jobs where they are actually useful? How many of them are there in the US? How many of them are there in other countries? What organizations have been thoroughly compromised by authoritarian control and have to be treated as enemies? How can any sympathy for them be destroyed?
Fortunately, Bob himself has a role to play in the latter. Bob, due to his autism and stupidity, says in public what other authoritarians in his movement merely say in private. That is a remarkable gauge of his utter failure as a human being: that
he is such a failure that his only real use is to sabotage the people who are stuck with him.
