Oh, hell George Takei said the same thing. And the problem is, it still does for some actors.
Remember TR Knight from the medical drama Grey's Anatomy. He was part of controversy when a cast member [Isiah Washington] allegedly called him a "faggot" on the set. Washington was fired and Knight left the show a few seasons later, mentioning that the show's creator Shonda Rhimes didn't want him coming out as gay.
Why would she do that unless she thought that:
A) Him coming out might affect the show's ratings in some way
B) It would effect his career
And to be honest, ya haven't seen TR Knight in much aside from a drama where he plays a friend of Picasso who also happened to be gay [because only straight men can play straight men; just don't tell that to John Travolta or Tom Cruise]. Meanwhile Shonda Rhimes brought back Isiah Washington even though he allegedly called someone a faggot and repeated the word at the Golden Globes.
Hollywood has one use for gays, kind of like minorities, they're a marketing gimmick. They'll say, "It doesn't matter what his/her sexuality is" but the moment they come out of the closet, get ready for the magazine cover with the word "GAY" in big bold letters and then once the afterglow is done...roles stop coming in, the agent isn't calling as much and then they suggest that the actor go onto Broadway because "gays are really into that theater shit."
Sorry if this was a bit ranty.
Bob's still a fat disgusting slob who probably smells like old cheese.
