This person is married, so probably a bigger place, but that also means two monthly incomes which Bob doesn't have. And in my experience, the amount of rent you can shave off by downgrading to a smaller apartment isn't that much. Are the rent prices in Boston suburbs similarly outrageous? Taking utilities into account, Bob could be spending three quarters or more of his paycheck on his basement apartment.

Bob's probably one of those wrinklenosers who visits a mid-range city with a quiet, quirky downtown area and a modest, but high quality art scene and says "Eww. I could NEVER imagine having to live in a place like THIS!"
