Travelling between countries before the EU was not hard, no. Especially if you travelled by train. Before the EU you could basically board a train in The Netherlands and get off in Latvia with no hassle or fuss except maybe the conductor would check your passport if you were unlucky.

Most of the European countries are connected by road as well so in most cases you can just drive across the border. The only time it might be a slight hassle to travel within Europe was when travelling by plane. By "slight hassle" I mean it was the same as travelling to any other country; make sure you have a passport and that you have a visa if you need one.

In fact, in my country EU membership was sold to the populace by the politicians and media as a pure convenience when travelling. "You won't have to remember your passport and you won't have to exchange your money to the local currency! How convenient! There are literally no downsides to joining!"

And look how it turned out. We exchanged our sovereignty for marginal benefits, most of which didn't even come to pass.
