Sports games have been popular forever. Tecmo Bowl and Blades of Steel on NES, Madden and NBA Jam took off on 16 bit, Ken Griffey Jr on SNES. I believe even Bob's beloved Nintendo put out black box Golf and Baseball games.

It goes all the way back. Not only with EA, but Bethesda made their start in sports games. I think it's the code EA stole to make Madden actually. But they did some baseball stuff. SSI also got really big off a Football game, because they made Computer Bismark and then someone submitted Computer Football to them and they were like shit, this is easy if you don't have to make the games. So, without Sports games you just almost don't have video games. Because these companies were using these sports games to push speed, and graphics and AI.

I hate that l know this, but a fair number of people do, either for marriage or because... well, who fucking knows. I noticed a few years ago that a lot of young conservatives and libertarians of my acquaintance had done just that. I even know a couple of former atheists who became Catholic (hilariously, they were both driven to explore Catholicism after long-term exposure to/involvement in the online atheism scene). It was also a big bone of contention between Tony Blair and his press team when he was British PM, as Blair was enthusiastic in talking about his conversion to Catholicism and — in the words of his media guru at the time, Alastair Campbell — the Brits “don’t do God.”

But I can’t imagine Bob was ever a true believer in anything but Mario.
