I could be wrong but I watched something very interesting about Sweden. Again I can be wrong but Sweden has tons of Welfare program and a shitload of oil money. The politics of Battle Royale 100% different from Hunger Games (though the film version of BR omits the politics for the most part, though the second less popular BR film haphazardly tries to draw a Bin Ladin metaphor to the characters from the first film that survive). You have to read the original novel or manga to get most of the backstory

Battle Royale takes place in an alt timeline where Japan outlasted the Nazis/Italians to be the last man standing in the Axis Power. Rather than nuke Japan into submission, America and other nations basically cut a deal ceding to Japan all of Asia to run as they see fit.

As such, Japan is a modern, prosperous dictatorship in the middle of a massive baby boom. But the new generation of Imperial Japanese types are rebelling and American influences are seeping in and you still have stuff like teenage gangs and such forming even with a dictatorship in charge. And with a lot of kids flooding the job marketplace, you have the rise of NEETS and unemployed young adults harming the image of Japan being prosperous and everyone being taken cared of.

So the Battle Royal came about; every year a random high school class is pitted to fight to the death while the results broadcasted on TV. Participation is mandatory and in the manga, a teacher is raped and murdered when she was caught trying to get several of her favorite students to avoid going on the school trip where the class was grabbed. The winner, while heavily traumatized, gets into the college of their choice free of charge and a guaranteed salary-man job. It also gives the public a good dose of fear that their kids can be grabbed and killed to keep them in line, while also providing a gruesome shit show that keeps the NEETS happy and sated.

Battle Royal's backstory though isn't as critical as Hunger Games is with regards to the worldbuildng. Hunger Games's worldbuilding and the backstory of the colonies/capital and the class warfare aspects are more important than the actual game. As stated, the BR movie (which is the most iconic version of the story) just makes briefest of brief note towards the backstory so they can get to the game and kids killing games. The second BR film DOES try (and badly at that) attach some political backstory with the survivors of the first film forming a Taliban/Al Quada type group to bring down the dictatorship and "how both sides in the conflict are bad" rhetoric. But it was so badly received it basically killed Battle Royal as a viable franchise in Japan, with the studio owning the rights to the two films wanting too much money/a big budget theatrical release, kept it from catching on in the US; though the manga and novel DID get released in English before BR1-2 finally did see the light of day in the US via an official release.

The only weakness I see in the "Society Holding a Periodic Child Sacrifice Game Show" premise is that the threat of having your child randomly kidnapped and killed is sure to be a big motivator for folks to rebel against the government. A way to work around this would be to create a religious reason for the sacrifice: "Those chosen to be sacrificed will have a really good afterlife" or "Children must be sacrificed in a ritual game to give life to the god that sustains the world" or something like that. Or you could avoid all of this by making the Sacrifice Games purely voluntary and open to orphans only. Gotta be plenty of those around in a dystopia.

It's tied to the idea that the cosmopolitan elites have such an iron grip over their people, combined with (in Hunger Games' case) backstory where the cosmopolitian elites completely curb stomped the poor rabble the LAST time they tried to rebel, with the plot point that they outright GENOCIDED (at least as far as the rest of the colonies know, as they were actually allowed to flee underground to hide as unpeople) one of the colonies just to make a point what would happen if they rebel again. Along with other vile and unspeakable acts of cruelty to remind the poor colonial masses of what will be done with them if they piss off the elites (the fate of Kat's childhood friend, who's tongue is cut out and forced to be a house slave for an elite couple after she's caught foraging after the elites banned foraging because one day, an elite wanted to come up with a way to make the colonists life even more hellish by banning them from hunting wild game).

Also, the most recent prequel novel made a point that besides being an extra kick to the face, the capital created the games explicitly to be a sort of bread and circus shit to pit the colonies against each other, with the added prize being that you got promoted to cosmopolitan elite status if you won. And added a betting scheme/assist scheme (people sponsoring players, providing them bonus items to help them), along with as seen in the first book, an "out" of sorts where if drafted, you could still escape being forced to participate if someone volunteered in your place. So it becomes something like Star Search or American Idol where the colonies get the pride of winning and knowing one of their kids will have a better life (and unspeakable PTSD).

Also Battle Royale takes place in an alt timeline where the freaking Imperial Japanese took on the entire world and won, as far America and Europe and the USSR ceding Asia to Japan, because after beating Hitler, no one had the stomach to invade Japan and nukes don't exist. The "Battle Royal" scheme becomes both a sign of Imperial Japan flexing it's muscle to remind it's people they are still in charge as Japan begins the early first stage signs of decline (overpopulation, plus NEETdom and lack of white collar jobs for the next generation), but also something that is so over the tope that those outside the age range can geek out over, which in turn ties into Japan's time honored tradition of game shows that are violent and misery porn-centric as far as contestants being tortured for cash.
