1. Anyone claiming that this is no different than any other cold season please present ACTUAL facts or be quiet. It is not helping the conversation to read your hearsay when people are actually scared. For the entirety of the US the CDC reports 61,000 deaths from the FLU in 2017, that's 0.02% of the population. This was also the high water mark for the last 10 years, the average gives more like 0.01%. So, let's say some of you are right and some of these COVID cases were actually the FLU, hell I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say 100,000 of them were the FLU and assume this was just a terrible year. That leaves 222K COVID deaths in the US SO FAR, 0.07%.
2. EVEN IF the COVID and FLU numbers were no different the FLU is something we have been dealing with for nearly the entirety of modern medicine. We understand its symptoms and its long term affects (Positron: he means "effects" or "sequelae") We LIVE with it as many of you want us to do with COVID because we understand how to better avoid it and what the actual mortality rate, etc are. Surviving COVID and living with it is something very new that we are still learning the long term effects of. From what I have read and witnessed personally I sure hope no one reading this or anyone else gets it, not even a mild case.
3. THE REASON IT IS STILL GOING ON AFTER 9 MONTHS IS BECAUSE PEOPLE, PARTICULARLY THOSE IN OUR COUNTRY, ARE SELFISH AND DON'T FOLLOW RULES. The entitlement of THIS DOESN'T APPLY TO ME or THESE ARE MY RIGHTS BEING INFRINGED ON is a really bad argument for putting people in harms way, I'm sorry. I had a conversation with someone from Australia the other day. Their BIGGEST outbreak, the one that caused a MASSIVE SHUTDOWN was less than 1000 people... let that sink in. They have gone back to 50,000 people football tournaments because DRASTIC SHUTDOWNS everyone here seems to be so against actually worked. They have had 908 deaths (.004% of their population), we have had 322K deaths (0.1% of our population) and climbing. That's 25X the deaths! The USA has nearly 20% of the COVID deaths IN THE WORLD. 1/5 of the deaths... in the world... while having 1/25 of the population!
4. All of that being said, none of us have control over these regulations. We can all have opinions about them. But... at the end of the day if you are making your best effort to not get sick or make others sick, that's the best you can do However, pretending that precautions aren't needed because it is an inconvenience to you is a slap in the face to anyone who has had COVID or has lost someone to it.
1, 2 and 4 are reasonable; 3 is not. As Chris would readily admit, we know too little about the new disease. We cannot be assured that, had people not been "selfish" and "entitled" and follow the regulations as recommended by experts, the chain of transmission will be broken. Even Taiwan, basically covid-free during Summer, had small indigenous outbreaks came winter:
Does it mean that Taiwanese suddenly became "selfish" and "entitled" since late November? I find it unlikely. Moral grandstanding is odious and probably counterproductive in disease control.
I'm pretty sure he is not wearing an undermask, and that piece of filthy rag isn't going to protect anybody.
