As for the Supreme Court case, it's telling that the BBC managed to run several articles, one involving a ”trans” 11 year old ”girl”, lamenting the fact that puberty blockers had been banned, but managed to ignore the detransitioners and the campaigners who had fought for this to happen. Well with the number of streaming and non iplayer on demand services those license fee number have got to be going down.

One day the number of old people who still watch TV will dip below what the BBC can survive on. The way I see it, the BBC was set up when ”broadcasting” meant sticking some 50 year old ex-Colonel with a fruity voice in front of a microphone twice a day to read out a bulletin about the Archduke of Austro-Hungary being assassinated, and the BBC is still being treated as if that's what it does while it behaves in a completely different manner. Either the BBC goes back to doing what it originally did and runs 5 radio stations and an impartial news + sport service, in which case I have no problem with funding it from government money, or it carries on paying Gary Lineker to be a Remoaner and occasionally opine about football, in which case we scrap the TV licence and it puts adverts on or figures out some other way of keeping overpaid and undertalented twats on the airwaves.

Part of it is that back in the day there were fewer than ten TV channels. With digital broadcasts, cable, and the Internet that limit's pretty much a thing of the past.

And the idea of government-supported TV isn't stupid on the face of it. There's plenty of good science documentaries that needed public funding to get off the ground. Weirdly enough, some of the first experiments with the modern TDRSS satellite network was broadcasting documentaries about fertilizer and pesticide to farmers in India. Good education should get public funds.

It is only my opinion, but I find moral grandstanding as both grossly selfish and entitled. Selfish in that is comes from one's desire to exert their self-styled moral authority over others to publicly their own egos and not over any genuine for public safety. It is always getting that dopamine fix by any means necessary, even if they must stand on a heap of corpses to proclaim their own piety. It is entitled behavior insofar as they believe that they believe that they are entitled to likes on Twitter/Facebook and praise for their own abhorrent behavior. Fuck, Chris comes off as the latter in particular through his relentless e-begging. Why would anyone in their right mind give any money for his boring podcasts or reminiscing on his glory days working at Blockbuster.

Fuck, I have fonder memories of going to the locally-owned video chains because they felt like part of the community and thus worthy of emotional investment. Blockbuster was a monolithic corporation that died off because it refused to adapt to changing market conditions.

Doctor Who has a particularly interesting history. Originally, the idea was to replace the American series Men Into Space with a similar "edutainment" show about a guy who travels in time, sort of like Captain Z-Ro in concept but not sucking. But the Daleks showed up and over time the show went from something exposing kids to Aztec retirement homes to something with less educational value than an average track from Sabaton.

It's a bit like how the Discovery and History Channels went from pretty dang decent to utter shit.
