Essentially the devs panicked and scrubbed off him from the team as every rational person would and remade character from generic furry to alright design

Let's talk about how garbage rest of these characters are. They look like edgy ocs 12 year old would draw

seems like it's a coagulated shitball full of shitty ocs and forced memes because the developers had absolutely zero artistic vision and just ripped off a ripoff of a ripoff of some shit some basement dweller made 20 years ago and repeatedly covered it in layers of whatever half-baked shit flowed out of their adhd-addled discord brains that day, for way too many days, until it turned into an autistic cacophony of meaningless drivel so meaningless that they could have instead made a game where a few blocky keys are jingled on screen with an occasional fart.wav sound effect mixed in to add high-brow comedy and it would have been functionally identical to what they had actually made

I can't speak for the root cause or causes that makes it happen in male users, but the root cause for female users is usually them being fujoshis, and the fujoshi aspect is fostered in those inclusivity-heavy hugboxes and metastasizes into games you wouldn't think would attract them at all. Both Dummies vs. Noobs and Guts & Blackpowder come to mind. Watching people have shipping and yaoi-related spergouts over those two games gives the same energy as the FTM crowd into Call of Duty now.

ETA: Some callout resources I figured would've been deleted/purged by now are still live, so here's examples. Attachment #1 is a thread from a disgruntled fujo (archive) calling out the DvN creator and staff over perceived transphobia and cyberstalking, and #2 is the staff response.
Also, as a hearsay anecdote, G&BP's community server I think has fan artists confined to their own respective drawing threads, and I've heard of at least one instance in which an artist's thread was removed entirely because they kept drawing yaoi ship art of in-game soldiers (either OCs or canon characters, can't remember and I'm not familiar enough with G&BP to confirm with certainty).
