RPGnet Forums

Oh brother. Though in fairness, CrazyIvan hasn't been a mod for very long, so he's not as emotionally invested in the role as others.

A sanitized safe space surrounded by emotional minefields is the opposite of inclusive and welcoming.

This thread's still open so the commoners can fawningly grovel over the mods for all their hard work, but I'd give some pretty high odds that it get shuttered as soon as the mods get criticized.
He may not have been as invested, but he's full of shit.

#1 is such a load of shit. I would need to do an assload of data collection, but I will HAPPILY put US$100 down on this theory: Tangency is where a majority of bans longer than trivial (more than 3 days) spring from.

Period. And if you're banning people willy nilly for fights occurring primarily in that one subsection, then maybe there's a fucking problem.

#2 is subjective. It can be hard to moderate things you enjoy, but is it any harder than being a DM/GM/whatever? Really? The reason moderating is so hard, Ivan, is because you and your buddies are fucking terrible at it.

#3 is pretty much 'no shit Sherlock'. Any kind of unpaid Internet volunteer deals with this, whether you're an administrator/developer on a MUD, or a mod on a forum. You only do this because you want to. And it's hard to motivate yourself sometimes. I've been there.

#4 ... yeah, fuck you, Ivan. Maybe not every mod, but some of the mods on RPGnet? You can see it in the Infractions board. Hell, you can see it when they put out bait posts. They get their rocks off on it. Don't fucking bullshit me. That's just insulting as hell.

#5 ... ... ... Wow. Ivan, do you just... not pay attention, you dumb faggot? You say this and then immediately admit 'well, we use phrases like x has a pattern of y'. God damn, I don't really have a problem with this -- when the time comes to give someone the heave-ho, it helps to have your supporting documentation in order. Fucking admit to it and say 'Yes, we notice if you start acting in specific unpleasant ways.'

#6 ... LOL. I'll bet you do, Ivan. Because you're probably wondering 'what are those people going to say to friends about our little clubhouse?'.

What a fucking faggot. Jesus Christ I need a drink.

Yes, mod actions like this, this, this, and this are well-thought out arguments that have been vetted by other mods. Right.

Such a welcoming place this board is!

It's extra ironic that so many of the responses to this problem are textbook examples of privilege.
"I don't see a problem, therefore there is no problem".
"Yes, there's a problem, but it doesn't affect me, so I don't care."
"Yes, there's a problem, but the people affected by it deserve it, so it benefits me/doesn't affect me, see #2."

They're not having any problems, so they deny there's a problem. This is weirdly like how people hector white people about 'systemic racism'.

"Systemic racism" is becoming one of this things like "microaggressions" where nobody can actually list anything anyone should care about. But yeah it's totally okay to burn shit down, murder people, commit arson, whatever, because of these micro-whatevers.

Wrongthink! Mod criticism! REEEE!

I would love to watch a few dozen poor Hispanics force their way into that mod's house. Then when they call the police the 911 operator tells them "oh how dare those people try and flee the elements to find shelter! The nerve!"

They actually make a good point here guys. I used to work landscaping in HS and it was crazy how many of those guys posted on rpg.net. Couldn't get enough of it. We'd sit in the shade on our lunch break and I'd listen to them chatter back and forth about this or that bit of Tangency news and it literally brought tears to their eyes sometimes to know that middle class white men had a safe space to reassure each other that women could have penises and that Orange Man was indeed Bad. These five foot nothing, tough as nails Mexicans that could mow yards and dig holes all day would sit there, weeping, tears running down their faces at the knowledge that white male IT workers had a place to come together and share their HRT regimen or show off a cute dress they got at the thrift store without fear of a casual "lol kys". Ok I'll stop dragging out the joke

Shockingly, Stephen Lea Sheppard used to act, and in The Royal Tennenbaums played a kid with such cripplingly weird social disorders he had a whole medical text written about him. Life imitates art.

What a faggot.

Once more, the degradation of English continues. It is now genocide to enforce a nation's borders, or to separate children from adults when there is question as to actual parenthood.

(Color me shocked, deviant liberals hate it when someone interferes in human trafficking.)

The half assed passive aggressive tone really pisses me off. I'd have more respect if he straight up said 'yes, your behavior elsewhere may become an issue'.

And oh God, the unintentional humor -- they're concerned that one aggressive, abusive poster could stymie ten other posters? This is the Internet, you fucking clown shoed pack of retards. Thanks to double-blind anonymity and the impossibility of slapping someone through the Internet, I seriously doubt an abusive or obnoxious troll is going to make ten other users walk off.

You know what might make them walk off, though? Mods who are petty, inconsistent, and mercurial in their enforcement of the rules. Imagine that.

The only instance I ever visited these particular forums were to see the In Which I Watch section, where users would give their opinions on old shows they had never seen before, and other users would healthily discuss said shows as well.

The best one, hands down, was Shadowjack Watches Sailor Moon, where the aforementioned user watched the original early 90's anime and, instead of a normal review, he literally rewrote the script of each episode in a comical and metalinguistical fashion. As a fan of creative writing, it was a blast to see how he handled each episode's idiosyncrasies and how he made an excellent use of the text medium.

But now I'm afraid to go back and check on his work. Chances are that he, too, follows the idpol agenda like an unquestionable dogma and references Current Year™ terms and events on it. Especially on the final two seasons, which has its fair share of queer-friendly characters. If that happened, then frell, I'll be disappointed but not surprised.

Yeah I'm sure RPGnet is full to the brim with illegal beaners who could be deported any day. Who the fuck are they thinking will even believe this utter bullshit?

Once more, the degradation of English continues. It is now genocide to enforce a nation's borders, or to separate children from adults when there is question as to actual parenthood.

It's not just that. Criminals are generally kept in adult facilities. Full of adults. Cartel members, rapists, other criminals. Do these fucking idiots think you can put kids in an adult prison?

Well, that didn't take long. Remember kids, any and all criticisms against the mods or their hugbox-approved beliefs come from alt-right trolls who want to literally murderape queer trans women of color!

"As a new mod, I was also very gladdened by how welcoming to propositions and new perspectives the mod staff is. In fact this is one of our stated reason for recruiting new mods with relative frequency, to bring in people with more fresh experiences of what it feels like to have been a regular poster of the forum, and the rest of the moderation team is actively listening to that sort of input from us."

:story:

And you can see how the left handles criticism in both ways here. When they have no power (rando poster) they try to muddy the water by talking semantics and getting off topic (what does SJW really mean? Is there really a definition?), and when they do have power (mod) they don't want a discussion, they just nuke you off the site.
