RPGnet Forums

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I just went through this thread for about an hour or 2 and holy fucking shit. These are THE most insufferable fucking people I have ever seen bar none. God speed to the people combing through it for the lols.
I'd go nuts trying to read through these monster raving loonies.

We're reaching levels of copium that shouldn't be possible.
You fool, you clown, you absolute buffoon.

Whenever they go down the "convicted felon" line on any site, I usually just bring this up:

And then write a paragraph or two about what does it say about the reputation of a judiciary that being criminally convicted under it makes one more sympathetic to voters, not less, in swing states. "Democrats need to take a long, hard look in the mirror," and so on. Something about it is just so... satisfying. And I'm not even the biggest fan of Trump or anything. I just love to fuck with these people.

It usually gets them to meltdown particularly hard. But they often also just delete the thread outright, going further than most mods who make an example of someone for their relatively moderate posts. That's what happened on ResetEra. Not sure I want to go through the trouble of making an account on rpg.net just to post this in their politics threads.

Your account would have the lifespan of an icecube on Mercury. Probably not worth the trouble.

It's fun enough to watch this asylum descend into cannibalism over their new ownership from afar, anyway.

Yeah, a new account would be an insta-ban. An old account would be "discussed backstage" for a couple hours, then banned.
You will get banned immediately. Introspection is not allowed in the hugbox under any circumstances.
Yeah lol, I'm quite aware that it would get banned immediately. That's why I'm not sure it's worth it. But man oh man, it's just so satisfying to give these people a wake-up call, even if it's just a drive-by.

Doesn't work in a place like that. At this point they are so rotted that just seeing you were banned for it tells them they don't have to think about it.

Introspection is deader there than independent thought.

It's so weird how everyone in all these forums seem to have turned out the exact same way. They're all clones of one-another.
It's a lot less weird when you consider that these kinds of people are expert at infiltration, and niche Internet communities are some of the easiest things to infiltrate precisely because normal people -- even weirdos into niche hobbies count as "normal" here -- would think to themselves, "Why would anybody bother? I just want to talk about TTRPGs/video games/whatever." They get proven wrong, of course, but you can see the thinking, as well.

You see the same thing in other high control groups like Jehovah’s Witnesses or Affiliate Marketing organizations. The aggressive moderation is not only meant to gate keep, but also model the appropriate mind set and highlight the desired lexical cues. Gaming is just a pretext to attract people through the door (like Scientology’s “personality test”) and the only ones who get to stay are those who can adapt quick enough before being shown the door.

When people feel like they are not in control of their lives or have deep-rooted feelings of inadequacy often use communities like these as a kind of self-medication. The participation is a simulacrum of accomplishment and power. You saw this with Miss Atomic Bomb acting like the moderation team is some kind of board of directors and they had to hold these lengthy and exhausting meetings because the CEO wasn’t properly vetted. The stakes are pretty low and it is pure fantasy enactment for the community to behave like they did.

Yes, I agree, and part of why these online communities are so easy to infiltrate is because they're supposed to be about fantasy enactment. I mean, I play TTRPGs and I'm in my mid thirties. That's fantasy enactment. So they're dealing with people who are already fairly open to humoring some pretty wacky ideas. On top of this, fantasy enactment is because you can't act out your fantasies in real life.

Any clues why I pretend to be a Billy Badass 900yo vampire who wears shades at night on the Interwebs? Because if I did that shit in real life, that would be ridiculous. It would be fucking absurd. I'd get ridiculed and I'd deserve it.

Most people who engage in fantasy enactment have imperfect lives. That is, their lives suck. So they're abusing people who just want to fantasize about this or that by threatening to take their fantasy away. And what are these people being abused actually guilty of? Working at Shop Rite into their forties and having alcoholic parents who hate them? These aren't strikes against them. They were raised to be treated like cattle their whole lives, and now they've found a particularly psychopathic master.

Double post but lol, imagine getting banned from the Neil Gaiman SA accusation thread for this:

That thread is going to be a fucking train wreck. The amount of minimising what happened in there must be off the charts.
So far it's quite the opposite. They're explicitly saying they're presupposing the allegations are true and even if they aren't he's a creep because age gap + he was their boss:

This screenshot is just as a summary. But basically they're all doing this, and also gnashing their teeth that their favorite author did a naughty no-no. Gaiman of course denies the allegations, but #BelieveAllWomen, so. Overall, in the minds of his fans, he's already crucified.

I like that they're cancelling all their faves so eventually they will have no media to watch at all except the porn they will goon to death with.

Credit to them, I'm not presuming the allegations are true but still stand by the second part with them.

Also I'm pretty certain it was a 40 year age gap. The fan was the 20 year age gap, the nanny is 23, it happened in 2020 and Gaiman is 63
