"Protected characteristic" sounds like woke BS because it is.
"Protected characteristic" is the label leftwing activists apply to groups and behaviors they want to promote, if and when the rules they advocate would harm those groups, were the rules to be universally applied. For example, leftists will support "censoring hate", but only when the "hate" is directed towards a "protected characteristic" - i.e. you can be as hateful as you want towards conservatives, heterosexuals, and non-pedos, but being hateful against pedos is not OK because "being a member of a sexual minority is a protected characteristic". It used to be almost a joke, but you see it all the time in leftwing laws and codes of conduct these days, especially in Europe but increasingly in America as well.
Basically, it's the final form of wokes spinning themselves around in circles, playing word games to try and convince you that "racism is always bad, but it's impossible to be racist against whites" and "believe all women, except when the woman is accusing a tranny". Eventually, they give up trying to pretend that their tiered justice system is NOT a tiered justice system, arbitrarily stacked against all that is good in the world, and instead just say "protected characteristic!" in hopes you'll shut up about the hypocrisy and injustice of their political agenda.
(if you ever wonder why Germans and Bongers will swear to your face that they have freedom of speech, even while the cops kick in their doors for Facebooks posts, it's largely due to this "protected characteristic" caveat. You can have any color of freedom you want, so long as its fully woke)
If you want to know WHY pedo is a "protected characteristic", it depends on the person arguing that.
For some people, it's because they're Marxists, and as Marxists, their moral calculus is quite simple: the more oppressed you are, the more morally good your cause is. Pedos are extra oppressed, so they must also be extra good (and in need of extra "class protection").
For others, it's because they're pedos, and they'll say whatever stupid shit they can in order to put themselves over.
In most cases, it's a combination of both.
In THIS instance, they'll probably try to walk things back and argue, not that PEDO is a protected characteristic, but that PORN CONSUMER is a protected characteristic. That's easier to defend, since there are (probably?) slightly more porn consumers than there are pedos, although the underlying logic ("censorship is good, except for X,Y,Z thing I enjoy" and "XYZ is not privileged behavior, therefore it is good and should be promoted") will remain the same.
