Russia's communications regulator has blocked instant messaging platform Discord for violating Russian law, the TASS news agency reported on Tuesday, making the San Francisco-based company the latest foreign technology platform to be restricted in Russia.

Discord did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Russia has for several years ordered foreign technology platforms to remove content it regards as illegal, issuing relatively small but regular fines when it rules that companies have failed to comply.

The regulator, Roskomnadzor, last week ordered Discord to delete almost 1,000 items it deemed illegal and has previously fined the company for failing to remove banned content.

Moscow blocked Twitter, which has since rebranded as X, as well as Meta Platforms' Facebook and Instagram soon after the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Discord Blocked in Russia

(translated from Russian)

Roskomnadzor explained that access was restricted due to violation of legal requirements

Roskomnadzor (RKN) has blocked the Discord platform in Russia for violating legal requirements. This was reported to TASS by the agency's press service.

"Access to the Discord messenger is restricted due to the violation of the requirements of Russian legislation, the implementation of which is necessary to prevent the use of the messenger for terrorist and extremist purposes, the recruitment of citizens to commit them, the sale of drugs, in connection with the posting of illegal information," the press service reported.

Earlier, Roskomnadzor sent a demand to the administration of the Discord messenger to remove 947 illegal materials. Several Internet pages with such materials were never removed, the department reported.

"In addition, in 2023, the court imposed a fine of 6 million rubles on the company for failing to remove illegal information - the messenger ignored the court decision," RKN added.

Since March 2024, Discord has been included in the register of social networks, which obliges it to independently identify and block illegal content. The company does not comply with the requirements of the law, in connection with which the court imposed a fine of 3.5 million rubles.

Since July 2024, Roskomnadzor and the Ministry of Internal Affairs have added 14 links to Discord platform pages to the Unified Register of Prohibited Information, according to the register data.

About Discord

The social network Discord was created in 2015 and was originally conceived as a platform for gamers. Roskomnadzor added Discord to the register of social networks in March 2024.

I don't like the cord but I don't think a couple of butthurt boomer Russian politicians banning it will erase it's degeneracy. Cheering on it's ban is retarded, if you are, don't complain whenever a site you do like gets nished.
Oh fuck off with this shit, first of all nobody needs a precedent to take down the sites you like, discord being banned in Russia is thus of no consequence to anybody but discord because kf might be banned (if it isnt already, I think it is lol) regardless of whether discord or faceberg or twatter is or isnt.
And second discord is a walled off, closed source, corporate piece of shit that melts peoples brains, facilitates the intellectual and moral corruption of the youth (our future) and generally ruins the internet, anything that hurts it should be celebrated and this doesnt give me some moral obligation to not protest when sites I like get take down as if everybody and everything is made equal and should be judged by equal standards.
Not cheering when your enemies get hurt is one of Nulls dumbest talking points.

Surprisingly enough, it is not. In the eyes of Roskomnadzor, the evil bad doupleplus ungood dastardly Kiwi Farms remains in good standing and can be accessed from any device while Deviantart, Furaffinity, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Discord can not, to name a few.
thanks, I could have sworn there was some drama about Russia blocking the farms years ago

Roskomnadzor keeps updating its list constantly. I do not know if they have a script automatically checking for the removal of naughty content or if there is an army of bureaucrafts ogling furry inflation porn on my tax dime to make sure it is still there, though.

Russian troon goes into withdrawals after 1 hour without Discord
Because rummaging between the couch cushions for spare change is too much of an effort. All social networks have exploded with ads for VPN providers. so getting one is not exactly a challenge.

Anecdotally, each of my many friends found their own solution. I thought we'd have to pull together and come up with one, but so far:

- Three people have rented a VPN from different providers. The montly fee is the same between all three and is 9 euros. They tell you to install something like AmnesiaWG and mail you a configuration file, no technical knowledge required.
- One person says everything works just fine because their regular provider is non-compliant
- Two people have fiddled with their routers and set up split tunnelling.
- Three people devised more creative tunnelling solutions via Holland, Ireland and Kazakhstan.
- Everybody else uses band-aid browser extensions.

Leave it to the troons to be histrionic drama queens.

Oh, and the troon says it used to work as a delivery person. With the Russian government cracking down on migrant workers, the demand for delivery people, street cooks, janitors and the like is skyrocketing. As the result, puttering along on a motor bicycle with a thermos bag will earn you more than the salary of a junior Yandex programmer. Learn to haul food.

Even if they block your VPN or even all commercial VPNs, you can just spin up an OpenVPN server on a shell account (and I am sure somewhere there is a web-based GUI for just doing it on any kind of server) and use that. I'm sure there's also a way to mimic normal web traffic on a conventional port.

Why didn't they just pay a Russian nerd to reverse engineer it and make their soldiers use their own brand of Discord? I swear, a lot of Russia's problems stem from late boomers/early Gen X born in the USSR still being in charge having a late stage Soviet era mindset, this goes for Putin as well.

It's literally IRC made shiny with bells and whistles, couldn't be that hard.
It's not like this doesn't have precedent, as I like to point out at work, MS Teams is practically a dumber, more tightly Microsoft integrated Discord. They're both chat apps written in Electron... which, initially, is not a huge feat of programming.

(edit to avoid double post)
Mostly due to boomers being in charge. Same reason they didn't take FPV drones seriously up until 2022.
Congress passed the "FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012" and the FAA started gutting the recreational RC drone and model aircraft space as far back as 2020 with part 107. Anything over 55 grams requires license and registration these days. They tried to make everything require a transponder... which fell apart when it meant there would be no drone that could fly under 55 grams.

The wheels grind slowly, but they eventually grind over everything you love or want to do.
