has america ever made guarantees that it will step in and defend taiwans independence with military force? i do not know this. if yes then china taking taiwan would be a disaster for america because it would create the terrible choice between war with china (which america can not afford) or complete loss of face on the international stage

If America loses that much face the powers that be are going to have a hard time reigning in the pissed off people who are angry that their country can't win wars because of muh fascism. Not only that it unironically might be the catalyst for an American civil war. In that situation it would get ugly real quick.

What are the chances that Russia invades Ukraine and China goes for Taiwan at the same time.

The world could get real spicy real quick.

Virtually zero. The weather in the Taiwanese Strait being a fickle bitch notwithstanding, Russia has zero to gain for coordinating an invasion with the Chinese.

The United States is not getting involved in Ukraine. The only NATO country that might be willing to intervene would be Poland, but since I don't think the Russians want more than a land bridge to Transnistria, they're probably not interested in spilling blood for that. I'm also sure they've probably had talks with France and the US that, if they intervene, that's a Polish and not a NATO war.

Basically nobody wants to die for Ukrainians, so the Russians don't need any heat taken off of them. Meanwhile a Chinese assault on Taiwan will earn a serious American response. @mantan is right. The Russians would far prefer a strategic alliance with the United States. They have a generalized hatred of radical Islamists, friendly ties with India, and relatively few geopolitical tensions. NATO autism in the 1990s and early 2000s helped sink a near-term Russo-American alliance.

That being said, the future conflict of China and Russia is almost guaranteed. The Chinese claim Vladivostok. The Russians don't base Iskanders in Siberia to protect themselves from Mongolia.

The Russians are likely planning to do something soon if they’re the ones behind the attack (and no shit they’re behind it). They might do something through Belarus or utilize their air force to try and strike Ukrainian positions.

Evidently there are now massive cyberattacks going on against various Ukraine websites.

Oh yeah, Ministries of Education and Foreign Affairs, Cabinet of Ministers and State Emergency Service.

Hackers left messages in broken Polish, Russian and Ukrainian.
And here..

...we...

....go.

The same cyberattacks happened to Georgia, back when that war first began.
There’s also info that the Russians may be attempting to start some sort of false flag op, to make the confusion more intense on the ground.
