Funny you should say that. "Accidents" happen. Usually when someone is hated, for various reasons like being a thief, unhygienic, a prick no-one likes, being a constant fuck-up, being viewed as a liability etc. I know stories of a guy who had both of his hands smashed in the Australian Navy by having a hatch dropped on his hands and another in the Army who "fell" out of the back of a moving truck. It is entirely speculative, but if Rand was strongly disliked in the Army there is every possibility that getting clocked with an ammo box wasn't an accident. If it was deliberate you wont find out as the guys who did it wont cop to it and Rand wont want to admit he was despised to an extent that his fellow servicemen maimed him in order to get rid of him.
