Glad it's shitted-ing and flopped-ing. Garry has been in desperate need of an ego check for well over a decade.
Here's hoping it drops to 41%!

I wish it wasn't so, but Garry is British so this was bound to happen. A Source 2 sandbox will need to be done by a spiritual successor to Garry as he was 20 years ago. If you want to make a game about players having freedom, you have to give them proper freedom.

It's not too late for the furries to move in, I'm still in morbid anticipation of the niggerhell that its addons could be.

I'm confused on why Garry mixed source 2 engine stuff with proprietary things that supposedly people deem as knockoff stuff from Unity. Did he make the choice to do a kitbash engine with Source 2 and other engines or did Valve only give him special use of source 2 in a limited state? Cause let me know if i'm wrong, but Source 2 isn't technically out yet for third parties to use, except for a select few that Valve greenlights?

What a tragedy. I would absolutely pay $20 for a no-nonsense Source 2 SDK but alas that is not what this game is.

Other than the gamemodes that are literally just TTT, Prop Hunt, Vampire Survivors, and Zombies, the only other gamemode that immediately caught my eye was some guy who created an entire in-engine SNES emulator, lol. What a strange state of affairs.

e: I booted up a session of Sandbox++, and I shit you not this is what shows up automatically at the top when I went to peruse entities.

George Droyd and a Kirk nextbot. :wow:

The George Droyd entity is a 2d png that follows and lasers you to death from its' eyes. The Kirk one is also a png that just runs at you really fast.

Feels like a game with no real vision and any sort of myopia that it does have has zero thought put into it. The sandbox is shallow and doesnt allow you to have any real "permanent" mods ala damage numbers or extra tools from start up, all the games are at most "eh", its not going to steal players from Roblox or Gmod because it requires a graphics card with the street value of a human kidney, and if anything of value is actually made from the Frankenstein engine will be ripped and sold on the actual store. S& would have had success if it was just Gmod 2, no game platform system, no additional C#, just the sandbox with a deal with Valve to import all assets from Alyx.

This has been covered a bunch iirc, but just in case it's not in the thread.

Supposedly Source 2 is intended for internal, pro developers. Valve doesn't want the headaches that come with making that public. Having to make public facing tools, documentation, support, etc.

The deal with Facepunch is they have to do all that work. They have to make the tools, the assets, the documentation, do the support, etc. That's why the claim that it's "open source" is a bit of a lie. Only the front end is, if I understand correctly.

There are some strange choices. eg. Source 2 is C++ and Lua. Why that didn't stick with that and force everyone into C# makes no sense to me.

I roll my eyes at the same complaints getting brought up again and again, because I get it. But it's burying actual criticism. eg. I agree that the game seems to lack any kind of unique vision or tone. The sausage people were a good start, but since the backlash, they seem to be going all in on vanilla with extra bland.

I don't think the performance matters much. A 1060 is well in the realm of "old". Some people keep forgetting Half-Life 2 was cutting edge at the time. So much so that Lost Coast was a benchmarking tool with a game attached, and iirc, for a while Valve didn't allow it to the public, only those with high end rigs. I'm sure you could run it on a IGPU at 100+ fps these days. I still remember when Source games had an infamous sound stutter bug that took years to fix, and even then I don't think it was fixed, so much as hardware caught up.

Now, if the game struggles to get above 60 (or even 30) on medium on a 5060 or whatever the current gen mid range is, then performance complaints are valid. But at the same time, there are people who spawn objects until their PC locks up. So you can't really benchmark a game like this accurately. Then there's the whole issue like we saw with Starfield where having a SSD was considered unreasonable for a new game.

The response he made seems like a massive cope. He still has time to put the money where his mouth is but I have a feeling it's just gonna be backend updates until the average player hits above 60fps but who knows. Kinda just seems like what everyone else is saying that it's directionless outside the realm of it being gmod 2

New blogpost.

If the best game in the world is made using the help of AI we're not going to tell you that you can't post it.

What about the countless shovelware garbage straight out of steam's "new" category? I can understand fence-sitting on AI with a zoomer audience but unless they invest in some quality control this "game" has no future whatsoever.

Been going around looking for info from people that have played the game for years before release, and so far it seems that the lighting, physics, backend (replacing DX11 with Vulkan) and tools got replaced by Facepunch which raises a big question:

If so many things core to the engine's identity have been replaced, is it even truly Source 2 any more, and if it can't be considered Source 2 is Facepunch therefore running a false advertising campaign by convincing people it's an on ramp into making games for the Source 2 engine knowing that so much of Source 2 has been expunged for new parts?
