Being a fan of the Ukrainian video game series known as STALKER, I'm wondering if anyone here besides myself are fans of the series. Anyone here a fan of the Zone and it's harsh denizens? If so then please discuss in all of it's dreary glory.

MOD EDIT: new OP by @Dick Justice
Somehow there's still no STALKER thread so I'm fixing that right now, especially now that STALKER2 is soon™.
OP copypasta from /sg/:

I tried to get the first game working on my computer about a year ago, but it just would not stop crashing. I might try it again, now that I'm on different hardware.

I don't know if you tried, but did you google the crashes?? It could yield a solution to what the problem could be, aside from that I have heard the first and second games are buggy. I only played the third game btw and I'd love to play the first and second STALKER games.

Bought the first game an age ago and love it but i've never played any of the others, will hopefully pick them up though once my new computer build is finished.

This is mostly due to GSC not Q/Aing for shit the game. It was also why a lot of the devs on STALKER left to go create Metro 2033.

Since then STALKER has had a surprisingly large modding community that has fixed a lot of the game's problems. There are two major total conversions that completely fix the game. There's STALKER Complete. Which is basically just a graphics overhaul and bug fix mod. There's also LURK which completely changes the gameplay around some and makes the game look much better in general.

Here's a screenshot of LURK compared to the vanilla game made in 2007.

Both Complete and LURK are available on Moddb. There are also Complete mods for both Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat.

It's a shame the series has ended though since the company went belly up. But to be expected considering they haven't made a game in a few years.

Aside from GSC closing their doors, I heard that a STALKER-styled MMO is being made. It's called Survarium.

Gonna necro this thread to say that I played the first one a while back. With bugfix mods, it is one of the best survival shooters.

It reminds me a lot of The Road in places, due to how harsh and dreary the Zone is. I also like how the bandits never become the total joke Fallout's raiders do. You outclass them in gear, but they'll still fuck your shit up if you're not careful.

I've played all three games, Complete mod installed for each one. Complete really is the proper way to experience things, in my opinion. It is Gun Porn: The Game, and adds a ton of new features, like random artifact generation and non-static anomalies. I played the original STALKER with the Complete mod for so long that I eventually managed to craft artifacts so strong I was literally immune to bullets. I don't think any modern effort has really come close to replicating the sheer, unrelenting bleakness of this series, or how it manages to continually make even the smallest gains seem meaningful. It's a great series, especially with the Complete mods.

I tried to play Clear Sky, my FPS proceeded to shit itself hard and eventually fixed itself. The next time I tried to play, the game crashed at the main menu and I haven't had much of an urge to play it again.

Play the Misery mod for Call of Pripyat if you're in the mood for a game that is perpetually balanced against you.

Yeah my favourite tactic is to pick someone on the bus and follow them ho-

Oh...you mean the game...

I'm pretty sure that you mean the AMK mod, because Complete is just a graphics+bugfix. And Complete for Call of Pripyat is known to cause save corruptions.
Either way, I was kinda surprised that a thread for this game exists, but since we're here, here's a design document for the original game and some concept art/in-development screenshots :.

I played the crap out of this series except for Clear Sky. I just didn't enjoy the faction war aspect of it. The other two were amazing. The atmosphere just sucked me in far more then most games have been able to.

Did play Lost Alpha, the free stand-alone reimagining of the first game? It's got a few problems(namely the super cringy voice acting in cutscenes but hey it's free!) but it's worth checking out imo.

Also I've been lately playing Call of Chernobyl, which is a freeplay mod that strips out the story and lets you start out as a member of any faction you want and then just fuck around, make your own goals and survive in the Zone. The mod has an option for Iron Man playthroughs which is that if you die, the game deletea your savegames so it's true survival. I'd recommend that too if you've played all the base games.

I didn't even know those existed. I played vanilla of all three and then did Complete of Chernobyl. I think the last time I played these games was 2010ish so this might be worth checking out. Did you ever try out any of the multiplayer in Call of Pripyat?

I used to cheese the hell out of Chernobyl by going over to the military boarder guard area near the start area, kite the soldiers into the rookie village, and then sit back while the npc's duked it out. After that I just walked in and took everything I needed including body armor and some reasonably good AKs. It's tricky but a life saver on harder difficulties.

Yeah, it was super janky though.
And as far as the mods go oh man, you've missed out on so much. There are a metric ton of mods that give the games a lot of content(although the quality is sometimes questionable and they may lack translations). I'd recommend Lost Alpha when the Director's Cut edition comes out and Sigerous Mod(SGM) for CoP because it introduces a lot of new content like quests, features and so on. Valley of Whispers is also a good CoP mod that takes place in a completely new map. Although, I'd probably play with a more basic overhaul first then expand into the larger content mods.

The devs were fucked over by the guy running the company. If you want it, they've basically made it guiltfree to pirate.
