I like his first sketch better then the weird Joker like fan art he gets. For one the eyes don't have that droopy look to them that makes her look sad. We know from his Youtube that Lucy was first animated back in August 2017 (and a comment from Sam suggests this was perhaps her animation debut). But Sam would've likely been kicking around the idea of Lucy pre-August 2017 is my point.

Sure, but that's the in-universe 'lore' explanation Sam probably came up with after the fact. What I'm interested in is where he got the idea for them in the first place. (For instance, I was looking at the thumbnail for that Oom-Pah-Pah video that @Pina Colda 88 posted, and that red hat started looking real familiar...)

Yeah. It just really makes me think is all. Particularly in light of those allegations about Sam just stealing and retooling graphics assets (that his peers apparently made fun of him at Uni for), that uncanny similarity with Fleischer that @Ryotaro Dojima pointed out earlier, the fact that Shuck is literally just Black Shuck, ... y'know? Makes me wonder if we're going to find some poor unknown artist circa 2014-2015 that liked drawing pictures of a suspiciously similar red-and-white cat in a hat and scarf.
When he mentions Disney, he talks about them like they're his equals or inferiors, while in reality, no Disney HR rep would ever allow him a first interview.
