I have a friend who has severe schizophrenia. In the last ten years he has completely deteriorated. He used to be a very intelligent, witty guy with an active social life and a job. Now he's just this scary shell of a human. He abuses hard drugs and drinks. He isn't allowed to know where I live because he'll steal from me. He's tried to kill himself at least a half dozen times, probably more. I only know about those attempts because he called me and I had to call 911. I try to help him, but there's only so much I can do, when he won't take medication or go to a therapist. It's a terrifying illness, and anyone who thinks it's sexy has never had to deal with it.

I know someone with paranoid schizophrenia. Now that he takes medication he says he always hear the voices of the spirits that wants to kill him, but is able to remember they aren't real. Without medication he would mistake you for a demon and could try to kill you. A girl could be 10 out of 10 that I'd stay away from that if I could.
That something could find something sexual about is just mind blowing.

In all fairness, I don't think the use of "fetishism" here was meant to imply that they literally find schizophrenic people sexy. They obsess over the condition and try to convince themselves that they are experiencing symptoms, but generally these people do it to exploit the attention and sympathy that people give schizophrenics. Same deal with just about every other mental illness Tumblr has latched onto.

One is dressing up as a fictional character or uniform for shits and giggles, the other is appropriating a mental illness that causes much suffering for asspats online. Here's the problem and I think you misinterpreted what I said.

I said "Doing this belittles people with actual schizophrenia." Not that they are consciously attempting to mock people with mental illnesses. What I said was "Doing this just makes people think less of the illness and makes people associate admitting to having skitzophrenia to "wanting attention" similar to how people self diagnose themselves with autism."

I really don't get why these Tumblr people glamorize and want to pretend to have mental illnesses, I have a few myself and it's anything but glamorous and fun. I especially don't get why they pretend or want to have schizophrenia, seriously, do they think listening to things like this:

Tumblrinas love to fetishize all mental illness. In fact, this board will be interested to know that they love to self-diagnose with autism, and in fact, there is an autism gender.

But everything - depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, PTSD, DID (a huge one, especially when "headmates" get involved), gender dysphoria (I forget the actual DSM term for this), bipolar, BPD, ASPD, and on and on and on....

I especially hate the "self-diagnosis" community. They parade around the cost of doctor's visits as the reason they can't get diagnosed, despite the fact that most are high school and college students and could easily see a counselor at their school... not to mention that most are under 26 and on their parents' insurance anyway... or the fact that a visit is not going to be much over $100 which is not all that much to save up for.

Ugh. I have a handful of actual, real, diagnosed, medicated problems and it drives me nuts.

I don't like self diagnosers either, I have no problem with someone researching something and thinking they may have something but then they should talk to their doctor or therapists about it. I'm not going to powerlevel to much here but I did some reading on Avoidant Personality Disorder and thought that much of it described me so I brought up to my psychiatric nurse and we went over the DSM V description together and we both agreed that in addition to having Borderline I also have AVD (the two overlap each other so diagnosis can be difficult though) as for the issue of money, there are a lot of places where you can get low cost or free therapy and psychiatric care.

When you dress up for Halloween, people don't give you candy because they actually think you're Jason Krueger. Everybody is in on the fact that you're pretending. You're not trying to convince anybody you're a monster serial killer.

I just don't understand why you would think it matters. These people will never be a majority, and schizophrenia has much more an history of destroying people lives contrary to "functional autism". If it belittles actual schizophrenia it is by a margin that can easily be overlooked.
