I don't think it's a huge surprise to anyone that the notorious 'Church' of Scientology has been hemorrhaging members over the past 20 or so years, with their reputation plummeting further with each passing year. I also don't think it's terribly surprising that this organization known for secrecy, manipulation, and deception has been greatly inflating their member numbers. Testimony from ex members, and investigation by those with knowledge of the inner workings of the 'church' reveal an organization that was never nearly as widespread as they claimed. At their peak in the early 90s their numbers were in the 100,000 - 120,000 range worldwide. Recent estimates put it at a generous maximum of 35,000 or so. The definition of member can be blurred, but in this context this is active contributing members to the 'church' itself.

Here's a fascinating video discussing this in-depth. If you're at all interested in learning more about this bizarre cult, this channel is a wealth of knowledge. Aaron Levin-Smith is a former longtime member, and resident in Clearwater Florida, the HQ of the 'church' and last remaining stronghold of their influence. He's running for city council in 2022 and seeking to combat their stranglehold over the city's businesses, and seeking to remove their tax-exemption status. 'Wise Beard Man' aka Mark Bunker, Clearwater City Council member, is a collaborator of his both in politics and on the channel.

I'm a bit of a Scientology watcher and have been ever since a mate and I decided to go and take a personality test years ago, just for a bit of fun. I'm absolutely fascinated by it all. L Ron Hubbard was an egotistical maniac, who seemed to slowly believe his own shit causing him to lose his mind. He was however, a very charismatic story teller and that's how people got sucked into it.

If you're interested in reading some of the books and shit he wrote, there available on https://stss.nl/, which is managed by one of the 'FreeZone Churches, called Ron's Org. (FreeZone and Independent Scientologists are two splinter groups which split years ago after Hubbard died.)

Oh, there's a heap of Scientology documents on WikiLeaks too, including all the OT levels.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. Indeed, it's the charisma, the mystique, that gets people hooked.
