Seattle Public Schools Want to Teach Social Justice in Math Class. That Hurts Minorities.

Seattle’s public-school district has proposed a new math curriculum that would teach its students all about how math has been “appropriated” — and how it “continues to be used to oppress and marginalize people and communities.”

A draft of the curriculum, which was covered in an article in Education Week, would teach students how to “explain how math and technology and/or science are connected and how technology and/or science have (sic) been and continues to be used to oppress and marginalize people and communities of color,” as well as to “identify and teach others about mathematicians* of color in their various communities: schools, neighborhoods, places of worship, businesses, etc.”

Education Week reports:

If adopted, its ideas will be included in existing math classes as part of the district’s broader effort to infuse ethnic studies into all subjects across the K-12 spectrum. Tracy Castro-Gill, Seattle’s ethnic studies director, said her team hopes to have frameworks completed in all subjects by June for board approval.
If the frameworks are approved, teachers would be expected to incorporate those ideas and questions into the math they teach beginning next fall, Castro-Gill said. No districtwide—or mandated—math/ethnic studies curriculum is planned, but groups of teachers are working with representatives of local community organizations to write instructional units for teachers to use if they wish, she said.
As strange as it may sound, this proposed curriculum is not the first time that someone has argued for teaching math in this way. In fact, in 2017, an online course developed by Teach for America — titled “Teaching Social Justice Through Secondary Mathematics” — instructed how to teach their students how “math has been used as a dehumanizing tool.” Also in 2017, a University of Illinois math-education professor detailed what she saw as some of the more racist aspects of math, claiming that “mathematics itself operates as Whiteness.”

I wrote columns about both of these stories that year — and, at the time, most people likely saw them simply as examples of “fringe” beliefs, confined to only super-progressive, ultra-woke circles. With the announcement of this Seattle proposal, however, we can no longer reassure ourselves that this is the case. Now, the social-justice approach to teaching math has officially entered the mainstream (and taxpayer-funded!) arena.

This concerns me, and, believe it or not, that’s actually not because I despise “people and communities of color.” In fact, it’s quite the opposite: It’s because this approach to teaching math will only end up harming the very groups it claims it champions. As The American Conservative’sRod Dreher notes:

The young people who are going to learn real math are those whose parents can afford to put them in private schools. The public school kids of all races are going to get dumber and dumber.
Guess what? Minority students are far more likely to attend public school than whites. In fact, according to Private School Review, “[t]he average percent of minority students in private schools is approximately 28 percent.”

In other words? The minority students, the members of the very groups that this curriculum presumably aims to aid, are actually going to be learning less math than they would have without it — because they will be spending some of that class time learning about how math’s racism has hurt them. Ironically, one of the curriculum’s goals is to teach students how to “critique systems of power that deny access to mathematical knowledge to people and communities of color,” and yet, that’s exactly what the district itself would be doing with it.

The historical contributions of communities of color are important, and students should study them. A better place to study them, though, would (quite obviously) be a history class, not a mathematics one. Mathematics classes should be for mathematics lessons; this is especially important considering the fact that math is exactly where American students (of all races) struggle compared to students in other countries. In fact, according to a Pew Research study from 2017, American students ranked 38th out of 71 countries in the subject. If we want to fix this, we need to focus more on math, instead of looking for ways to teach less of it in the very classes where our students are supposed to be learning it.

The bottom line is: If Seattle’s school district really wants to help minority students excel in mathematics, the last thing it should be doing is proposing a math curriculum that would teach less of it in the schools that they’re most likely to attend.

A reasonable article for once. It’s true though, the last thing those kids need is less math in math class.

It might be worth to bring back this thread from the dead with that article from the Washington Free-Beacon.

As more students fail to meet academic standards in Seattle, public education officials in the city are proposing that diversity, equity, and inclusion programs receive more funding than core academic subjects.

Seattle Public Schools would spend more than $5 million on so-called DEI initiatives, including a "racial equity analysis tool" and an after-school program for black male students who are "referred to as kings," according to a district budget proposal for the 2022-23 school year. The budget allots a little more than $4.5 million for core academic subjects, such as math, science, and literacy. More than half-a-million dollars would be cut from the science budget as well. The school district lists "racial equity," "engaging students of color," and ensuring disciplinary policies are not used "as a substitute for culturally responsive behavioral and social emotional supports," among its guiding principles for the budget.

The decision to prioritize DEI programs comes as students' proficiency in reading and math has fallen 6 percentage points and 16 percentage points, respectively, since 2019. Test scores from last year found nearly 56 percent of Seattle students are not competent in science and about 57 percent are not competent in math. Just 30 percent of black students and 18 percent of Native American students are meeting grade-level standards. Public school officials in the region have blamed the COVID-19 pandemic for learning losses.

The Seattle school district's budget recommends around $1.3 million for scholarships and programs in "Native Education," about $1.5 million for "African American Male Achievement," and nearly $1.3 million for the "Department of Racial Equity Advancement." Another $600,000 would be set aside for "Ethnic Studies and Black Studies," a district representative told the Washington Free Beacon, as well as $650,000 for a Latino academic support and cultural studies program. In addition, each of the district's three budgetary goals has to do with improving educational outcomes just for black students.

Under the proposed budget, however, math and literacy courses receive around $1.6 million each, and science courses get $1.3 million—around $850,00 less than the district's DEI programs.

When asked why the "Native Education" would receive more funding than science classes, a spokesman told the Free Beacon budget allocation is "a complex process that involves community input, stakeholders, students, etc." The total Seattle school district's budget is around $1.14 billion.

Parents across the nation in recent months have agitated against the rise of race-based educational movements like critical race theory and "antiracist" instruction in public schools. Some have gone as far as to sue school districts, alleging the movement's are fomenting a new form of racial discrimination. The issue became particularly salient during last year’s Virginia gubernatorial election, with Republican nominee Glenn Youngkin pledging to ban critical race theory being taught in public schools.

And one poster on City-Data forums posted a rant who's worth to share.

Being born and raised in Seattle, this isn’t shocking at all. I still live in the Metro Seattle area and this is only the tip of all the stupidity that is going on within the city itself, to include the public schools. This poison is destroying disadvantaged kids of all Colors, not only Black and Brown student, but every student.

Sadly, the Progressive Liberals support this kind of BS and are shocked that when an individual graduates from High School and can barely read at the 4th grade level and not prepared to enter into the real world of work, where WOKE-ism is only tolerated to a certain point. In return, they fail in life and blame racism, since this was taught to them and pounded into their heads that America is an evil country.

Growing up in the south end of Seattle back in the mid/late 1970s, which was predominantly Black and Brown at that time. Our teachers, especially the Black and Brown ones, many of them served in the Vietnam War were very forward with us and point blank with their “commands,” which wasn’t up for debate. Mouthing off in gym, the coach would get up in your face AND dare you to do something so he could “crash your landing” and “scuff you up” on the wooden floor!!

Most important, they told us that life isn’t a joke and you, being of Color, better be prepared to face the real world and take advantage of this opportunity to learn something that can help you achieve success. They made it a point to say that you can succeed in life, but you have to work hard and not fall into all the traps that were out there like drugs and crime.

Today those teachers would have been fired for not supporting this WOKE BS.

I respected those teachers and looked up to them even when Mr. Canada, our principal, told me to bring my nappy headed self to his office, where he gave me the choice of a two day suspension or two whacks from the paddle… I took the two whacks after utilizing some critical thinking skills…. If I took the two day suspension, my dad, a Black man that grew up in Mississippi in the 1930s and 1940s, wasn’t going to give me just two whacks with his belt, but dispense a serious beat down!!

Btw, half of the punishment was when he hit your backside with that wooden paddle that “sheet” echoed down the hallways AND!! Everybody laughed at you as you went back to class!! All I know is that Mr. Canada put all his heart and soul into that effort to correct you with that piece of wood and it worked!!

Mr. Canada, a light skin Black man was a good role model to many since when you asked you help, he was always there for you… Regardless of your Color, and was always upfront and real with you.

Back then, there was no BS about Participation Awards, but again, the way Mr. Canada guided us wouldn’t be acceptable in today Seattle Public School System.

Sadly, the Progressive Liberals do not see the harm they are causing kids today, especially Black and Brown teens

They do not see it today but they will see it tomorrow. Whether they, themselves, will suffer from it is up for debate but they are not the type of people who will ever acknowledge their fault nor take any blame for it.
