So, a while back I was encouraged to make a thread about Second life after posting some stories of my experiences messing around on the site over on the furries thread. I didn't really know how to start introducing people to the concept of SL if they (somehow) hadn't heard of it, but I think I've found somewhere to start. I did a search to make sure nobody already made a thread but I didn't find anything, so I'll give it a go. Here is the wiki article ahead of time.

Basically it's a MMORPG where people sink thousands and thousands of dollars creating this alternate reality for themselves where you can do anything and be anything. That includes cheating on your spouses and ruining your family structure! I have personally witnessed this happening! Twice!

Considering you can do whatever you want and be whoever you want, obviously people start taking themselves way too seriously and start doing some obviously deviant things. Sex is probably the biggest market on SL. You can legitimately make a stable real life income building virtual sex toys.

So that being said, obviously people started wanting to have sex with child avatars, then this whole big thing happened and a news report brought all that nastiness to the surface. This was about when people started to really talk more about how...weird... Second life can be.


I can't even really begin to explain the deviancy of SL, but that's not the only thing that made me want to make a thread about it. A lot of people who play SL seriously (in my personal experience) are the most hot headed and easily butthurt people I've come across online. I have tons of experiences to share if people are interested, I've done a "tour" so to speak and spent a little bit of time in every community I came across just for fun and it was quite entertaining. I'm sure there has got to be other people on this forum who can also testify to how ridiculous Sl's user base can be.

This is a marketplace where you can spend a ton of money basically buying whatever you could possibly want for your happy little second life.

So wait, are these people in their late 20s or early 30s? Either way, that's just sad. Then again, playing Second Life is sad in and of itself no matter what age you are.

I have no idea of the context of why the shouting match happened or the ages of the people involved, all I know is that these people are getting legit angry with each other in a video game, and it's very sad...

The drama in the SL community is unmatched. The FURRY drama even more so. If there ever were a place to find grown men and women screaming at each other over inconsequential shit, then...well..this game is the place.

While I'm sharing videos, here's a fun one where a woman starts losing her mind over a guy messing around in a sim. It's REALLY loud so, be prepared. The good stuff starts at about 5:10 in.

Very, but you have to remember, Second Life's a game for morons made by morons. I'm more than certain that the drama and the porn outnumber the sane and sensible in that game.

whole thing is just sad... I don't know if it's just me, but it seemed like Second Life could've been something revolutionary. I'll admit that the concept itself is very interesting - creating a second life and actually making money off of it through jobs. This could've been revolutionary, but it was ruined.

It was ruined by child porn and idiots with inflated egos. Again, this whole thing is sad.

It's a lot like anywhere on the internet, except you get free reign to play how you want/make the game what you want. Inevitably people are going to chimp out when they get too invested. I guess one of the things that makes it such a cesspool is because you have so many opportunities to get invested. Some people play the game for more hours in a day than they do anything else (including sleeping) so they're bound to get irritable when their fantasy life is disrupted.

I am simultaneously surprised and not surprised this "game" still exists.

About the only thing I'm not surprised is why this game magically stopped being talked about years ago...because it's basically the ultimate form of escapism.

Thank God OPL apparently has not found it.

It has an extremely sharp learning curve, an unfriendly interface, and is pretty resource-heavy. Plus the better-looking stuff all costs real money, which adds up quickly. Those all combine to make it much more niche than you would expect.

That's Chris's MO already. Only difference is it's not Nintendo's e-Shop getting the money.

In truth, it probably would be the only method through which he could create his beloved CWCville in a size where he could walk through it like he's always wanted. Complete with weird, bastardized sex obsessions mixed in.
