Self Diagnosis Hate Thread - This is a thread to scream about people saying they have a disorder/disability and not/never having that shit on paper, especially if you do.

I agree a good amount with some of these opinions, but I think I wanted to focus more on things that are self diagnosed without any insight of any other sort of "professional"
That's a challenge, because between doctor shopping and the internet telling people exactly what they need to list off to get a diagnosis, a professional diagnosis is barely different than a self diagnosis; further, the fact some people do differentiate means there's now a profit incentive in psychological professionals telling people whatever they want to hear, which is probably why there are so many shit therapists nowadays who just tell people whatever they want in exchange for money.

The entire argument and weird snark over self-diagnosis seems like a common tumblr-ish thing, and munchies themselves seem very obsessed with whether or not anyone else "really" has any given disorder.

The truth is lots of regular people don't hate on self-diagnosis, because they don't take the field in general that seriously. They don't care whether or not some fat girl went through the process of paying a kook somewhere to agree she has fibromyalgia or gender dysphoria or whatever. The whole thing is a bit silly.

Now it just seeks to pathologize and correct human social behavior where it used to explore human nature and individuality. Now we partake in chemical soft lobotomies and emotional castration so the proles will work the machines.
It's sort of like with ADHD: if anyone wants to take ADD meds to better tolerate boring crap then fine, the world is what it is, but it's interesting how it needs to be considered a disorder because if people in general acknowledged that being "adhd" is normal and we've reached a point where we need to suppress human nature to function, that would have unfavorable implications, and might suggest the system is the problem.

People have to take individual steps to deal with it, the world isn't going to change for us because it's unfair, but I don't like how a baked in part of the field and the culture is to portray the individual as broken, rather than portraying that they're a healthy person who will have to take steps to tolerate an unnatural environment.

Getting an "official" diagnosis for any kind of psychological disorder is just as much of a joke as self-diagnosis. Psychology is an unserious field of medicine.

I cannot speak to the field of adult psychology but from personal experience the entire field of pediatric psychology is very much an unserious and fundamentally corrupt institution.

Granted, that view very well may be tainted by the atrocious experience I personally had, but the older I get and the more people I talk to who are my age and went through something similar the more I think that there is something fundamentally corrupt with the very field of psychology as it is practiced with children.

Slight powerlevel

When I was young child, in 6th grade to be exact, I got moved into an in-patient treatment program for eating Disorders since I was struggling with Bullimea and Anorexia.

What I saw there was people who were genuinely hurting and suffering with real psychological disorders. I saw girls no older than 12 or 13 who were wheelchair bound because of severe malnutrition and despite that those same people would refuse to eat at any meal and would try to purge (throw up) any food they did manage to take down.

They knew they were actively wasting away and still chose go eat nothing. They were happier to die than to potentially gain any weight, even if doing so would vastly improve their lives.

I'll never forget what happened on my last week in the program. I got to watch a little 9 year old girl get dropped off by her father and cry nonstop the entire day. Even at age 13 it occurred to me how soul-crushingly wrong the world must be for someone so innocent to suffer so much.

Politically motivated ideologes on the "Pro-Trans" side of the debate absolutely HATE when you compare eating disorders like Anorexia to being trans but it is absolutely a reasonable comparison.

They both have an internal idea of what their body "should" look like compared to what it objectively is in the real world. An Anorexic person looks at their body and sees a fat person while feeling that they should be thinner, even if that is biologically impossible.

This is almost exactly how a trans person looks at their body. They feel they should be the opposite gender regardless of the objective reality of that not being true as well as it being biologically impossible to accomplish.

Both of them are social contagions that primarily spread among groups of impressionable young girls and require diagnosis and treatment by a certified psychologist.

Seeing firsthand how much actual suffering a mental disorder like Anorexia can cause, I cannot imagine choosing to affirm that delusion just because of political correctness.

The entire field of psychiatry in the United States has shifted from a diagnostic model of care to one of "affirmative consent" which is mind bogglingly retarded on so many levels I don't even know where to start.

Can you even imagine if this was practiced with eating disorders.

"Why yes, Stacy, you a 11 year old girl are actually fat at 45 lbs and should definitely stop eating altogether to get skinnier."

As outlandish as that sounds, it is literally the model of care adopted by Psychiatrists in Canada and the U.S.

You can also see this affirmative model of treatment layed out in the massive uptake in DID diagnosis, where the psychiatrist is told they need to affirm the individuals lived experience rather than challenge them. So any retard can google the symptoms for DID, present them, then start looking around for a doctor who will affirm their self-diagnosis.

Until psychiatrists are able to push back against their patients, I think the entire field is basically on a collision course with reality and we're going to see alot of horrific shit before things finally start to improve. Especially in regards to pediatric psychologists, considering the patients they have are literal CHILDREN, which absolutely should be pushed back against.

Sorry for the long rant, but seeing psychiatrists so willing to accept the delusions of a group of impressionable young people when they SHOULD be the people telling them they're fine and to knock it off, is so infuriating to me it's hard to put into words, I welcome you're MATI stickers.

My parents got me tested when i was 10yo. Vision tests, hearing tests, IQ tests, psychiatric evaluations... Turned out to be ADD. Got put on Ritalin, wich made me super moody and unable to sleep. They would force them down my throat, it was child abuse. Grade 7 i went to a boarding school, the school nurse wasn't paid enough to care if i was taking them. Life got so much better onward.

There's alternatives ways to cope with ADD or ADHD. Don't melt your brain with "legal" meth. All fakers are fags and/or junkies.

anyone who says they are autistic without having a superpower like rainman or being an actual mushmouth retard
"oh my god dude im such an autistic because i like my little pony and collect elevator manuals"
no thats called being anti social and unrelatable.
it doesn't matter if a doctor diagnoses you as one because they are just guessing and will give you a different answer every time you talk to them

Surprised it took that long for the a-word to get mentioned.

Maybe everyone who self-diagnoses with autism either has it or deserves to have it.

The only mental health professional I trust is Varg Vikernes:

>some insane people were interesting and were treated badly
>some company makes a movie about one of those people
>it becomes a hit
>slop-brained normies think it's cool
>slop-brained normies start self-diagnosing to get attention

Pretty much how it works.
DID is particularly interesting to me because while it may have been popularized by Hollywood, there's really very little if any evidence whatsoever that the disorder or its effects exist anywhere outside of suggestion and pathology. There are a lot of areas of this type of disorder that once were considered psychiatric symptoms on their own, whereas many are now regarded as mechanisms that were introduced by therapists and psychologists treating the patients. This video does a great job exploring the topic and it's one of the uploader's more underrated videos. While it's not necessarily about DID specifically it does touch on a lot of the same ideas - memories being locked away, having separate areas of the psyche which need to be explored separately, and the idea that you can live as more than one person without any one of the personalities or psyches being aware of the rest. And this used to be mainstream psychological science.

We do much of the same now without the idea of hidden memories or psyches. We see someone who claims a mental ailment and we work backwards from the claim to the question. We blindly accept that there must be an ailment when one claims, or else one would not claim to have one at all. We treat mental health like we've all just been keeping dirty secrets for thousands of years. Like all of humanity has been masking severe depression for all of history and now anyone who's brave enough to speak up about it must have it because the stigma means you'd be deprecating yourself by making the claim.

Psychology isn't all horseshit. It isn't stupid to experience clinical depression or something like Tourette's, nor is it made up. The field of modern psychology makes a mistake by trying to pathologize and remediate all human behavior to a degree that is considered acceptable and/or desirable. It is not seeing the forest for the trees. It's haphazardly sawing through random trees until a path seems to appear, if it ever even comes to fruition. Where the broad and varying schools of thought of yesterday gave a lot to consider and little in the way of empirical conclusions, modern schools of thought all claim empirical conclusions without the evidence to support it and bases the efficacy of treatments based on changes in symptoms, not the afflicted feeling that they have overcome or understand their hardship.

Psychology especially should be about self-discovery in any form. As it stands it's only about problem solving by using empirical studies. It's about throwing shit at the wall until something sticks and the afflicted individual reports a change in behavior or station in life. Modern psychology seeks one outcome and that is an improvement in behavior by its own standards and the self-reporting of individuals, from which all of modern psychological theories stem.

Seriously, we went from institutionalizing women for being restless at home in the 1940s to never institutionalizing anyone ever for any reason because that's just rude. And we're still building off of the same theories from the mid to late 1800s that brought us those institutions and ideas.

A lot of the symptoms self-diagnosed autists give themselves now just don't make any sense. Hyper-empathy? Objectum sexualis?

It's just pathologizing and creating new terms for self perceived traits or behaviors to feel special. Any hobby is a hyperfixation, any nervousness is a panic attack. If you sit with your legs crossed right over left it means you're autistic and if it's left over right, it's ADHD. Such videos suggesting as much lead to confirmation bias. Everything is a symptom if you want it to be because needing actual symptoms is ableist.

If you have to fake symptoms of a disease to make your life more interesting then you are a loser and a faggot. Real mental health disease needs no exaggeration, but we've reached a point of overcorrection where mild nothings are written up as worthy of medication and people begin to build their personalities around their worst traits.

Then the services are flooded with these retards that wear their 'totally real suffering' like a badge of honour or like a membership of some Harry Potter house. It's fake, gay, and annoying. The people who need these services can't get appointments and suffer for some fat idiot shouting 'beans' over and over for engagement mining.

I have terminal hufflepuff, please give me medications and ass pats.

that's where the true conflict lies. "acceptable" and "desirable" are completely subjective assessments. who is the arbiter of what is acceptable or desirable when another person's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are concerned?

yes, yes, we live in a society, but unless you're causing grievous harm to yourself or others, it's only you who ought to be assessing and defining what is acceptable or desirable for yourself, even if you need a little help to do so.

Psychology especially should be about self-discovery in any form.
precisely.
psychology is about becoming the arbiter of your own life. psychiatry, however, is about assuming that endeavor for you by chemically restraining you within it's ever-evolving notions of what is "acceptable" and what is "desirable".
