We have about 3 months, those of us who use it. Laid off the developers last week. This leaves me without a secure messaging app.

I need a replacement. Something that runs on the desktop as well as phones. Security as a prime consideration. What do you guys use?

1. XMPP + Omemo

you can setup ejabbered on a $5 VPS with the most basic understanding of linoox and the ability to cut and paste

and there are also public servers you can setup an account on @ https://list.jabber.at/

Monocles client for Android

Gajim for Desktop

ConverseJS for web

Monal for IOS
There's also Siskin for IOS

You can also run an XMPP server as a hidden service and use a SOCKS5 proxy for any of the above clients

2. Briar is a great project for peer to peer messaging that has offline and Store & Forward capabilities but doesn't support group chats

3. Lower tech but email with a PGP keyring of the recipients will always work with software like GnuPGP or Gpg4win

4. Columba is a project that uses the Reticulum Network Stack that enables LXMF messaging and voice calls with LXST. You can use it with any LXMF messenger like NomadNet, Sideband or MeshChatX

5. Simplex chat https://simplex.chat/ looks interesting, but it's marketing hype and claims are a bit sus. I haven't used this myself so can't comment on it. Also very difficult to self-host.

Do not use Matrix. Fuck Matrix and it's design by commitee janktardation.
I also advise against Signal. Signal requires your phone number, borderline closed source, and is nearly impossible to self-host. That alone should be a red flag.

why not use matrix? is it only because of the design?

what do you think of this signal video:

can concur, left when those faggots bowed to uk censorship. bunch of fucking fags

can you provide a source please?

they downplay it alot in this but the fact is they are a company located in britain and as such will be forced to implement things that do violate their beliefs unless they move somewhere that respects freedom. of course, none of this matters if you just use another homeserver but unless you have the capability to self host your probably gonna be hard pressed to find a server not hosted by pedophiles or gooners. a shame really, i quite like elements ui (even though it is just discords ui)

What do you guys even use it for? I guess the person on the other end needs to be a user as well?
They do need to be a user, yes.

As for use case, it's nice to have a conversation with someone without it being data mined, and the contents used against you. Even if it's just "hey, grab some laundry detergent while you're out.", I don't want people snooping in my communications.

I guess only case that would apply for me would be people here who asked for offsite contact. And I am not very confortable with that.

Otherwise, I don't know anyone I could get to sign up for one of these. Maybe Signal, but that's a stretch most of the time.

I mostly heard about Session through Alex Rosen, so that does not help.

This. As a daily matrix user I don't recommend the software despite loving it so much (more than half of that is the frens ofc). I have faith that in a few years the space will have evolved to the point the matrix protocol is a viable option again with the alternative implementations and whatnot.
