SF Debris / SFDebris / Charles Sonnenburg - One Man's Attempts to Make Videos While Fighting the Universe Itself

The universe has once again failed to assassinate the Castro of video reviewers, fortunately his son's alright:

Update from Chuck regarding the show's hiatus:

Assurances

I'm writing this to you all because I realize that the past six weeks have been unusual for the show. I have attempted to run it with as much professionalism as I can. Recent events suggest that this is no longer the case, and may give you the impression that I am turning away from this, or have lost interest. I'm writing this to assure that nothing could be further from the truth.

I love what I do. I work too hard at my job because I love it that much. I also have a combination of personal history that compels me to push through. My parents through their actions set the example that you do what you must, regardless of circumstance. And in college, I suffered an undiagnosed illness that left me sometimes unable to speak, frequently feverish, always miserable. I student taught for eighteen school days in this condition, but was unable to teach the final two; my parents finally picked me up and hospitalized me to treat me and find out what was wrong. I failed the course as a result, and completely altered the trajectory of my life. It only further instilled in me a loathing of personal weakness.

It was explained to me that it's a matter of attrition. You carry and carry and carry but eventually, one more thing becomes too much to carry. With the absurdity of the move being rolled back without warning after nine months of work, I stubbornly decided to plow ahead with my plans regardless, to not allow these problems to continue to interfere. This was, in retrospect, foolhardy. It was unsustainable. I do not feel the work was ever compromised, but it's clear that I was compromising myself.

The revelation hit like a ton of bricks. Literally. And I use that word accurately. I'll be telling the story on the show of the impossible-to-believe "chimney of surprise," but it was that moment where it was just going to take one more thing, and that was it. I have been producing the best show that I can since then, but its release has been spotty. People have been saying I should take a break, I've always taken that as the good natured advice we all need, but when even someone who works as hard as Linkara does tells you that you need to step away, it's probably time to listen.

But it's hard to break old habits, and how you think is a habit. I feel like I did during those final days of student teaching, knowing what I should do, determined to crawl if necessary to do what needs doing. It's just saying "I just have to do this," "I just have to reach this point," "I just need to survive for this long," until it's behind you and you can set the next one. When you say "I just can't do that any more" and are met with "then you have failed," you can understand why it is so hard to ever say those words again.

But I have finally gotten it beaten into my thick skull, and it took literally getting hit by a ton of bricks to do it. I just can't do that any more.

You have no idea how hard it was to type that. I had to stop and compose myself before I could continue.

I am sorry. I have been stubborn. I should have just put on the brakes. I should have just accepted that I am not invincible. I should have just accepted that burning willpower to achieve slow, sporadic progress was worse than just doing nothing. Sometimes, the strongest thing you can do is to admit you're not as strong as your self-image says you are, and that there's no shame in that.

You have supported me and encouraged me for a very long time. I thank you for that. Please accept my deepest apology for the gravity of my mistake. And please be patient as I take corrective measures.

I will be stepping away from the show until July 17, then I will begin working on it again. Until that time, nothing will happen, so nothing will be released that day, I just wanted to tell you what the idea is. I'm going to fix the hole in my ceiling and repair a lot of broken wiring (turns out a falling chimney is not good for your electrical system). But otherwise, I'm going to rest to try to come back refreshed and give you the best damn show that I can.

Thank you. LL&P

I noticed recently that his review of The Day After has mysteriously vanished. I know its a long shot but would anyone happen to have a copy?

Chuck obviously isn't a cow, but he's clearly got some incredibly shitty luck.
The stuff about his wife, his health, and that crazy hidden chimney... I personally wish him nothing but the best... Jesus fucking Christ, he deserves it at this point.

No posted schedule for the second half of August despite the continued uploads, however, we are continuing to get home updates.

If he made a series out of the demon house, I'd probably enjoy it even more than Angry Cops' This Old Crackhouse series.

I missed this one but he posted about being at his wits end with the video hosting situation on the 5th of November:

Crazy Ads, and What's Going On Now

Post by SFDebris » Fri Nov 05, 2021 6:18 pm

Well, after six years of bouncing from host to host, I thought I'd finally seen it all. DailyMotion has now unveiled an entirely new way to screw with me. After having shut down the channel without warning at the start of the year, and basically undoing everything I had done starting in March of 2020, I came up with what I thought was a fool proof strategy of diversifying the videos over multiple channels, so that if one went down, others could take up the slack. Well, as they say, you just need to find the right fool.

Rather than not being able to host videos on DailyMotion any more, as was the problem in the past, I can still host just fine, provided I'm willing to allow ads to appear every other minute. These aren't even smart ads, they just interrupt things, usually with the same ad you just saw. And to just round this off, you watching these ads does not benefit the show in any way. The show made 63 cents in DM ads in October, and since it cannot be withdrawn until the balance reaches $100, I wouldn't see the money from the ads you watched in October until March 2034 (that is not hyperbole).

As a matter of fact, this is actually harmful. The YT ads I do actually benefit from, and are offsetting the contraction of income because of the impact the economy is having. DM making an environment so hostile that an adblocker is the only way to watch, means that people won't watch the ads that actually support the show. In other words, DM's creator support is the thing most likely to kill the show.

So, DM has found the solution to how to kick me off, make it so it's intolerable to watch my videos on their platform. To be clear: I cannot turn off the ads. No matter what you might have heard, it is only possible if you are in a special bracket of their partner program, and no matter how many times I apply, I never receive a reply. It's been a month since the latest attempt, and still nothing.

Hence why you've seen an explosion in old videos going up. I want to try to get the videos off DM and onto YouTube as fast as possible. The hindrance is that this requires every single one to be redone to satisfy YouTube. There's no guarantee on how easily that can go. The latest X-Files went up on the first try. Battlestar Galactica: Saga of a Star World took an entire day. That's an entire day of no new work being done.

Star Trek, naturally, is going to be the most difficult. CBS jumped on 11001001 because they felt one of the clips in a video otherwise filled with freeze frames, ran too long and so needed to be blocked. Putting up the original full motion versions on SFDebris Red is not going to work. I have some other plans but they will not be ideal.

Why am I not using Service X or Host Y for this? I have looked at the other options, repeatedly, and it always leads back to the same problems, and frankly, I am about at my wits end. I can't keep doing this. I want to put out new works, and as I found out last spring, doing this stupid maintenance AND putting out sufficient new works is impossible, I am no longer young enough to have that kind of physical stamina and emotional strength. And the irony is that often, the new material is presumed to be old material anyway.

Please understand, "Just do [this]" is the kind of thing that makes me want to turn off my computer and crawl back into bed. I've looked into [this], and there is a detriment that makes it not worth wasting time I can spend on the current plan, which I believe is likely the only long term solution.

I will attempt to have a week's schedule of what is coming updated at all times, with a note of what is old and what is new. The past two years have been extraordinarily difficult in the real world, and coincidentally it's been the same with the show. But every effort is being made to solve this, permanently, and try to keep the fun coming. In the end, the most important thing is that we're all friends sharing our love of speculative fiction. I don't want to ever lose sight of that.

I'm sorry for his loss, but the majority of his uploads have been reuploads for months now.

Chuck can never catch a break, can he?
I've watched a few of his videos but not nearly enough to be considered "a fan". I will say this - I've been in and around a handful of Kickstarters that either failed or had to be severely curtailed. The one thing many of them had in common was the creator complaining about a litany of personal problems and "bad luck".

Not accusing him of anything at all, just an observation.

ok who are the faggots forcing sfdebris to watch my little pony?
I think they come largely have from Linkara's audience. The moment he announced he was going to review animation due to money issues there was a bunch of bronies/weebs who thought they were going to convert him and just started burying him in requests until he closed the queue when the backlog reached 6 years.

For this year's Christmas special, Chuck reviews his final Voyager episode and then gives an overview of his time both getting started on the Internet and the show in the reflections video.
