Remember when rental copies used to come out months or even years before the home versions? and you could buy them for a massive premium sometimes? Last ever rental copy I ever bought was RE1 in possibly 2002. Cost me £60. Came out 3 weeks later on normal DVD for £15 with extras and subtitles. Gutted.

I did manage to get a rental of 1989 Batman for £60 and that took nearly a year to come out retail back in the day. Plus rental boxes in the UK were so much cooler, they were bigger with different artwork.

Do you remember when big HMV’s (maybe it was only the London flagship actually) used to sell rental copies sometimes?

I also remember films staying in cinemas longer before going to rental. A film coming out for rent was more of an event. Also old horror film boxes (80-2000) where so much better in the UK.

I don't know about "old," but the other week my sibling pointed out that the PlayStation 2 turned 20. I'm only a few years older than the PS2 so I wouldn't say it made me feel old per se, but it was really odd to think that the video game console I grew up on is now considered old if that makes sense.

I do indeed. That was where I got my Batman from.

Yeah they were bigger than the standard UK VHS boxes, too, which were still better than the US card sleeves. Have Nightmare on Elm St 1-7 on Big box, and Friday 13th 4-X, few of the Troma censored UK rental releases too in the rental big boxes. Blockbuster destroyed the big boxes, it all ended up being cards in plastic folders to flip through.

I was lucky where I worked we still got a certain number of big boxes in (they also let me buy them cheap when after a few months they didn't need as many copies) but I do remember occasionally going to blockbuster and them having one box with artwork and you had to grab one of the one's behind it, eh never sat right with me. Blockbuster did change things though I remember 80’s video stores as a kid and they where always dark and tiny with standees everywhere, they basically where awesome although they only had like 2-3 copies of big films.

The horror section in stores was always awesome in the 80’s/90’’s I dunno if it was the drawn artwork on the boxes back then or what but finally being allowed to rent horror movies was an event.

Plus lying about your age when you actually looked 12, cos well we all know we tried that at least once to get an 18 cert film. Kids these days can just stream whatever.

Shit I even remember the first tape I got to rent. It was Superman III.

And...

"But mum, It's only a 15!" I remember having that argument so many times when I was about 10 in the dingy rental store by me called "VIDEOLAND". Regardless of the fact I'd already seen Nightmare On Elm Street 2 and Robocop by the time I was 8, wasn't allowed a 15 unless my dad took me there. Good times... 18s were dad only but I'd get to watch a few.

My most vivid memories are the old shit horror films like The Stuff, Squirm, Slugs, Ghoulies, Phantasm, Amityville etc... They all had amazing covers back then for a kid with an overactive imagination.

edit: this always got to me as a kid... This was the VHS UK cover I remember:

Starting to feel the limitations of my body. My back and feet hurt more, and the aches last longer doing things that wouldn't have phased me at all in my 20s. Hair starting to thin, starting to see a bit of grey in my beard. Can't go out drinking like I used to, much more conscientious of my finances than I was in my 20s.

Realizing the PS2, the console I loved in my later high school and college years is considered retro now. Being called a grognard because I haven't moved past 3.5 D&D. Rambling about things that make me feel old counts as well I suppose...

All this new slang. Not even in my 30's and someone saying simp makes me feel ancient. Thought that meant a thirsty simpleton until recently.
It doesn't?

Vietnam vets being old as I remember ww2 years vets being and current servicemen not remembering 9.11

Being afraid of cops when smoking pot and then remembering they can't do shit in current year. Being bewildered by strain menus at dispensaries. Sativa, Indica, blended, wtf, I remember green weed or mbw. Mexican brick weed aka nigger-weed for the uninitiated. It's as nasty as it sounds. If it even still exists.

First film I saw at the cinema that I was too young to watch was Batman Returns my dad took me to this dingy old cinema we had with one huge screen, back when we has cinemas that where more like theatres not multiplex’s.

I also remember renting IT (the original tv series) from the store when I was around 9 or 10 I had to call my mum and make her talk to the clerk cos I wasn’t old enough. Oh I also did that with the child's play movies before the panic.

I was lucky I had a friend in primary school with an older brother that had films like poltergeist, nightmare on elm street and Halloween and let me watch them, my mum threw a fit.

Do you remember when we had the 12 certificate for a bit and then it went away.

Edit to add,
Oh God the old stores I remember this old standee for basket case that used to freak me out when I went in. Also even kids movies in the 80’s had awesome box art like Dark Crystal and Neverending Story.

Ghoulies haha I remember my aunt renting me that and princess bride to keep me quiet once. Also Critters 2 was awesome don't care what people say

Old man yelling at clouds but I can remember old Viz comics having ads for OAVs and they being like 80-100$ for dubbed or subbed. Also now feeling old for remembering how the only translated manga was from Eclipse and Viz and even then it wasn't something g you found at your garden variety comic shop.
