I know a lot of people who only play the most recent entry of x and think that's the only one that matters.
To be fair, that's not a new thing at all. Final Fantasy 7 was the first
really big entry in the west. The one that made the jump from nerds to normies. Only gamers had "3", only Real Gamers

had "2", and nobody had 1. When 7 came out, it
was Final Fantasy. And that's okay. I'm not gonna be that guy who says that you're not a true FF fan unless you've played the real Final Fantasy 2, and not just because 2 sucks shit.
I personally am the type who deep dives a franchise I get into and tries to appreciate the history of it, but I wasn't always. When FF7 came out, my thought wasn't "what about 4, 5, and 6?", it was "oh boy more Final Fantasy". As long as you're not being a dick about it, scoffing at people who play older games, it's perfectly fine to focus on the present. It's what everyone's talking about. Games are more fun when you can talk about them with your friends, discuss strategy, tips, tricks, and so forth.
What makes
me feel old vis a vis video games is thinking about a fun PC game from my childhood and realizing there is no feasible way to play it because modern PCs consider its code to be the computer equivalent of Aramaic. And no, I don't consider setting up a Windows 2000 VM to be feasible just so I can take a trip down memory lane once every three years.
