Show up drunk/high/tripping balls and half ass it until they fire you and then you can collect unemployment while you look for a new job.

No that would be considered terminated for cause and literally any employer would fight that unemployment claim because it's a slam dunk for them. Unemployment isn't free for your company, it affects their future tax obligations twords the federal (and state where applicable) unemployment trust fund.

Like others have said, don't get fired, and don't quit unless you have already been hired by another firm.
If you get fired, good luck using that place as a reference. Eight years is a long time, and having that on your record will look good.

Start looking for a new job if you don't like your current one. Don't quit.
Work on ways to relieve your stress, such as exercise. What stresses you out about the job? Is it something that you can improve on, if even in the slightest?

Literally, the only reason why I haven't quit my job without notice is the fact that I've worked there long enough to receive unemployment...if only they had the common decency to lay me off. I have a pretty important interview next week, but even if they give me an offer, it'll be months before I can get the required security clearance. I'm absolutely fucking miserable and I have been since May.

Plus, I ran through all my usual excuses for missing a day due to other job interviews I've had while still working here. I've had a "doctor's appointment", a "follow-up doctor's appointment", "cousin's wedding", "eye doctor's appointment" and I'm thinking about "dentist appointment" but I can't remember if I used that one yet. Fuck.

Like others said, the best idea is to have another job you can jump to once you quit. I had to do that recently, when I got a new boss and my department turned to shit. My friend who had been working as a receptionist for over three years quit two weeks into the new regime and I got out a week later. We're in a different boat then you are though, because we're student workers at a college and can easily switch departments without too much difficulty. But if a job is literally making you sick with stress, you shouldn't make yourself go through that.

Without getting into things too much, I think it really depends on your living and financial situation, only you can know if you can afford to quit right now while you look for work without having another job lined up to jump into.

If your job is making you this unhappy, and you can afford to be unemployed then honestly I would just quit it and proactively job search. I study on Open University and until recently I was in a job that made me absolutely miserable to have some spare money while I studied. Eventually after 18 months of stress from being bullied I just said one day that my studying was taking up too much of my time and quit and I've been so much happier ever since. So honestly if you believe the most important thing in life is happiness and you can afford being happier then go for it, you'll know yourself whether it's time to quit or not.
