Shrek is shit and fuck you if you're a fag still obsessed with it!
Shrek legitimately ruined childrens movies, it was the start of the "lets sprinkle in pervasive adult humor so adults will watch it" and it has never stopped since. There will never be a pure childrens movie again, thanks to Shrek.
Pretty sure Shrek wasn't the first. I remember Toy Story having some adult jokes in it like this one...

One thing about Shrek 2 that nobody talks about is how fucking great the soundtrack is. Anything composed by Harry Gregson-Williams is fantastic, but even the licensed songs they use work really fucking well surprisingly.

Also this scene is kino not gonna lie.
Shrek 2 was unironically kino and a good example of how to do a sequel properly, which unfortunately cannot be said for 3 and 4...
Shrek is 20 years old as of today

Ngl, for a 20 year old cg movie it's held up surprisingly well.

Shrek 1 is among my most favorite movies. Yeah, its humor isn't for everyone and it did completely change how animation was approached for better or worse, but on its own merits, it's a movie that manages to poke fun at contemporary children's films while also remaining sincere.

The rest of the movies range from great to terrible. 2 was a great sequel, but it just doesn't hit me like the first one did. 3 was clearly rushed out and 4 was pretty mediocre all things considered.

I rewatched Shrek 1 recently, and I still found it cute and funny. And Shrek 2 is definitely an example of a great sequel.

What disappoints me about Shrek is that it basically became what it was satirizing originally. It became such a big brand that it became comparable to Disney at its time, and by movies 3 and 4, it had basically become a bland money machine skating by on its earlier achievements.

They made the world looked lived-in. That said there's some scenes that definitely show their age. But this is definitely a movie I remember watching quite a bit back when it came out. It was even the first movie I ever owned on DVD. Even on occasional rewatch I'll enjoy it. The Guardian probably just hates it because it gets them clicks when they, along with every other British publication, really should just shut the fuck up forever.

2 is better in pretty much every area though.

I found the Japanese dub by accident, and now I'm curious how other dubs handled this scene.
