Disaster Side Effects of Smoking Marijuana Every Day, According to Science - "It's just muh natural plant"

(s/a)

Marijuana is now legal in more states than ever before, with medical marijuana proving an essential tool to relieve symptoms caused by chemotherapy and AIDS, or for those in chronic pain. Others just use it to relax, especially during stressful times (like the ones we're going through now). But it's important to note that smoking marijuana doesn't come without risks, particularly if you do it every day. Here is what could possibly happen, so you can be aware of the risks as well as the rewards.

Daily marijuana use can lead to "feelings of fatigue or apathy; feelings of anxiety, paranoia, or panic; temporary hallucinations," says Dr. Jenna Liphart Rhoads. As well as, "trouble taking care of oneself and lack of hygiene practices; disconnecting from activities or people they once enjoyed; impaired memory and confusion."

"Chronically inflamed airways that result in a chronic cough, sore throat, or runny nose, and put the user at a higher risk for respiratory diseases or illnesses," says Dr. Rhoads.

"Make no mistake about it, smoking marijuana daily carries with it very real potential for addiction. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates that between 9% and 30% of those who use regularly will develop marijuana use disorder," says Dr. Mary Gay. "I have observed significant negative effects on clients who habitually use marijuana including reduced academic performance, job loss, legal consequences, depression, anxiety, and in several cases, psychotic symptoms requiring hospitalization."

"Compared with placebo, marijuana cigarettes cause increases in heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and forearm blood flow via increased sympathetic nervous system activity," says Dr. Kim Langdon. "In addition, marijuana has been associated with triggering heart attacks in young male patients. Smoking marijuana has been shown to increase the risk of MI onset by a factor of 4.8 for the 60 minutes after marijuana consumption, and to increase the annual risk of MI in the daily cannabis user from 1.5% to 3% per year."

"Functional MRI studies have also revealed functional and structural changes in brain areas involved in reward processing after chronic cannabis use and in the processing of emotion," says Dr. Langdon. "Some studies show a higher incidence of schizophrenia in chronic adolescent and teenage use of marijuana."

"Daily use of cannabis can desensitize the endocannabinoid system and override its natural capacity to maintain homeostasis. In layman's terms, using medical marijuana too frequently can knock your endocannabinoid system out of whack a bit, which can have an effect (though not always a negative one) on some of your body's natural processes, like your sleeping habits, mood, appetite, memory, and fertility," says Dr. Daniel Whitelocke, M.D., Founder of AR MMJ Cards. "Because the endocannabinoid system was only identified as recently as the 1990s, experts are still working toward fully understanding it."

"Marijuana use during pregnancy can be harmful to your baby's health. The chemicals in marijuana (in particular, tetrahydrocannabinol or THC) pass through your system to your baby and can harm your baby's development," says the CDC. "Some research shows that using marijuana while you are pregnant can cause health problems in newborns— including low birth weight."

Smoking daily increases the chances of having "problems with decreased fertility in both males and females," says Dr. Rhoads. It can also be a factor in erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation.

"Withdrawal from cannabis seems to induce a lack of motivation. Cognitive dysfunction and memory problems are other potential problems such as abnormal response to stress," says Dr. Langdon. "A clinical diagnosis of cannabis withdrawal includes irritability, anger or aggression, nervousness or anxiety, sleep difficulty, decreased appetite or weight loss, restlessness, depressed mood, and physical symptoms causing significant discomfort such as shakiness or tremors, sweating, fever, chills, and headaches."

"Marijuana is said to be a fantastic muscle relaxant, and people swear by its ability to lessen tremors in Parkinson's disease. I have also heard of its use quite successfully for fibromyalgia, endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, and most other conditions where the final common pathway is chronic pain," says Peter Grinspoon, MD, writing for the Harvard Health Blog. "Marijuana is also used to manage nausea and weight loss and can be used to treat glaucoma. A highly promising area of research is its use for PTSD in veterans who are returning from combat zones. Medical marijuana is also reported to help patients suffering from pain and wasting syndrome associated with HIV, as well as irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's disease."

Being high at work is fucking awful, I'll never understand that shit. The single time I ever got high at work I was extremely paranoid the whole time and never did it again. And yeah all that stuff you said about working with stoners is true, they wear a chilled out mask but put a little pressure on them and you'll see all the anxiety and anger they've been supressing with pot pour right out. I used to smoke every damn day, but now it just seems like such a waste of time and money that unless somebody else is buying or I'm with certain friends, I'll pass on it.
Yeah I don't know how people do this. Unless you have a job where you don't have to work with anyone else and can be really productive when high. I'll admit I'm a degenerate pot smoker but i could never imagine smoking and going to work. I save that shit for side projects in the evenings or hanging with friends (though this depends the friends and the activity were doing)

I know a lot of people who smoke everyday who are quite successful (smart, well paying job, married a good person, have kids etc), but then again my hometown has an entire underclass of white trash skids similar to the fake chill super-sensitive people @Nate Higgers mentioned in their post. These are the weed personality types but there's this particular sketchiness about them that you don't see with casual or even other daily weed smokers. Perhaps it's becauss you can tell they're cravin, but they don't even seem like they're particularly having a good time when they smoke. It's weird.

Anyway, I find it interesting some people can do it often and carry on through life normally while others become the weird stoner types discussed in this thread. I'm assuming its just differences in personality but curious what the rest of you think

For the past 3 years, I have smoked (well, actually dry herb vaped so not as bad I guess) a small amount of weed every night. I occasionally stop, intentionally leaving it at home when I go away for a week or two with work, just to make sure I'm not dependent on it.

Everyone is different, my experience is not necessarily what someone else would have. But for me I've never felt better. I've come up with some of my best engineering ideas while high, it allows me to switch off when I need to, and even enabled me to half my usual prescription of anti-depressant medication I've been prescribed on and off for the last 15 years.

Getting high to me gives a different perspective to things, which stays with me even in the morning when it's worn off. I can't say the same thing about alcohol.

So does anyone here have any stories about the Devil's Lettuce's effect on people who didn't start smoking until adulthood?

Edit: The later the better, like, adults with something that could be described as a career or family (not college freshman).
I started smoking weed in my mid thirties after having federal and military work for most of my life. Legit took my first drag of devil's lettuce at 33.

It's fine. I could take it or leave it. It makes me more introspective at times then I like but for the most part it's fun for the occasional toke. If I can't sleep I'll hit a pipe then nod right off.

Come to think of it I haven't smoked in a month. I think starting late curbs the impulse of becoming "lol dude weed".

I think there's nothing wrong with weed or booze in moderation. Doing either daily is awful for you. Stoners tend to downplay the addictiveness of weed. It's not like liquor or opiates but you can't tell me that mood altering drugs aren't habit forming.

The big upside to legalization has been the introduction of mass market CBD and high CBD blends, in my opinion. Stoner weed is just too strong, too much THC and it weirds me out. CBD is a fuckin great alternative to pharma painkillers, much easier on the body. Whenever I get tension headaches or pull a muscle CBD is my go to. It should honestly be looked into as a legitimate analgesic.

As for dude weed retards, my personal theory is that kids that start smoking before they turn 17/18 basically get brain damage. All the high school burners basically stopped developing past adolescence, I think weed fucks with brain development.

Tobacco is taxed to hell and back, shit you can't even go outside without some gay ad telling you you're going to die, people treat you like shit and look at you weird, meanwhile stoners are fucking degenerates of society and nobody gives a shit and wants to legalize it all, of course we're pissed.

Every stoner I know has lost like 30 IQ points and is obese and has no personality, meanwhile people who smoke a pack a day have 6 pack, chad, etc.

Fuck this world.

I feel you. In Eastern Europe, if you don't smoke tobacco and don't drink alcohol, your man card is replaced by a fag card.

I should probably lay off the night cap/night smoke. No one to blame but myself though it's hard to quit bad habits, especially bad habits that let you enjoy some work/hobbies and temporarily distract you from your country transitioning into a shithole.
Stoner weed is just too strong, too much THC and it weirds me out.
Agreed. I prefer the weak stuff, and small amounts of it, for this very reason. You either get weirded out/green out, or are just lazy. It's fine if you already planned on having a lazy night but such a guilty shitty feeling if you don't get anything done because you're too baked.

I haven't delved into it, but I believe there have been a number of studies detailing how smoking in adolescence and late teens impacts brain development. I want to say early 20s is when the impact of weed on the developing brain diminishes.

I'm in favor of medicinal marijuana simply because it is being used like a drug is supposed to. If you like weed, do teas or edibles, do not smoke it.
Nah you can still get medical marijuana and get high off your ass to the point where you gain a significant tolerance to it. I got a weed brownie from a guy like that and I didn't understand how the hell anyone could enjoy the sensation of dry eyes, constant half-second hallucinations, dry mouth, and thinking time is passing way faster than it actually is. He needed 3 weed brownies just to feel any effects from them.

Dude lives below me and the weed stinks up the entire building when he smokes it. He works out so he doesn't physically fit the stereotype but Christ I hate the smell.

My idiot brother smoked himself to a severe mental breakdown. Dude burned through hundreds of dollars worth of weed, resins, and edibles in the span of a couple days thinking he was going through a divorce; ironically making his paranoia a reality.

Fucker got what he deserved. Now if only he'd stop leaving a human shaped groove on my parent's couch so they can have some semblance of normalcy in their older age over raising a brain melted adult sized toddler.

Years and years ago when Reddit was still a semi usable site I got absolutely drawn and quartered for mentioning the story of a girl I knew. She was a big stoner who did zero other drugs and ended up becoming a paranoid schiz from the weed alone. Last I heard of her she was obese and had to be put on some nasty anti psychotics.

Fellow oldfags: Just picture a female version of elderly 90s Peter Green singing "The Green Manalishi" and that was basically her.

Some people can handle weed but others truly can't.

Blah blah more idiotic drug war bullshit. Weed is still less harmful than alcohol; and the drug war has done more harm(as in FAR MORE FUCKING HARM)to our rights, public health and public trust then any amount of weed ever could.

Fuck this straight edge bullshit and fuck the people like OP that still push it.
