Disaster Side Effects of Smoking Marijuana Every Day, According to Science - "It's just muh natural plant"

(s/a)

Marijuana is now legal in more states than ever before, with medical marijuana proving an essential tool to relieve symptoms caused by chemotherapy and AIDS, or for those in chronic pain. Others just use it to relax, especially during stressful times (like the ones we're going through now). But it's important to note that smoking marijuana doesn't come without risks, particularly if you do it every day. Here is what could possibly happen, so you can be aware of the risks as well as the rewards.

Daily marijuana use can lead to "feelings of fatigue or apathy; feelings of anxiety, paranoia, or panic; temporary hallucinations," says Dr. Jenna Liphart Rhoads. As well as, "trouble taking care of oneself and lack of hygiene practices; disconnecting from activities or people they once enjoyed; impaired memory and confusion."

"Chronically inflamed airways that result in a chronic cough, sore throat, or runny nose, and put the user at a higher risk for respiratory diseases or illnesses," says Dr. Rhoads.

"Make no mistake about it, smoking marijuana daily carries with it very real potential for addiction. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates that between 9% and 30% of those who use regularly will develop marijuana use disorder," says Dr. Mary Gay. "I have observed significant negative effects on clients who habitually use marijuana including reduced academic performance, job loss, legal consequences, depression, anxiety, and in several cases, psychotic symptoms requiring hospitalization."

"Compared with placebo, marijuana cigarettes cause increases in heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and forearm blood flow via increased sympathetic nervous system activity," says Dr. Kim Langdon. "In addition, marijuana has been associated with triggering heart attacks in young male patients. Smoking marijuana has been shown to increase the risk of MI onset by a factor of 4.8 for the 60 minutes after marijuana consumption, and to increase the annual risk of MI in the daily cannabis user from 1.5% to 3% per year."

"Functional MRI studies have also revealed functional and structural changes in brain areas involved in reward processing after chronic cannabis use and in the processing of emotion," says Dr. Langdon. "Some studies show a higher incidence of schizophrenia in chronic adolescent and teenage use of marijuana."

"Daily use of cannabis can desensitize the endocannabinoid system and override its natural capacity to maintain homeostasis. In layman's terms, using medical marijuana too frequently can knock your endocannabinoid system out of whack a bit, which can have an effect (though not always a negative one) on some of your body's natural processes, like your sleeping habits, mood, appetite, memory, and fertility," says Dr. Daniel Whitelocke, M.D., Founder of AR MMJ Cards. "Because the endocannabinoid system was only identified as recently as the 1990s, experts are still working toward fully understanding it."

"Marijuana use during pregnancy can be harmful to your baby's health. The chemicals in marijuana (in particular, tetrahydrocannabinol or THC) pass through your system to your baby and can harm your baby's development," says the CDC. "Some research shows that using marijuana while you are pregnant can cause health problems in newborns— including low birth weight."

Smoking daily increases the chances of having "problems with decreased fertility in both males and females," says Dr. Rhoads. It can also be a factor in erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation.

"Withdrawal from cannabis seems to induce a lack of motivation. Cognitive dysfunction and memory problems are other potential problems such as abnormal response to stress," says Dr. Langdon. "A clinical diagnosis of cannabis withdrawal includes irritability, anger or aggression, nervousness or anxiety, sleep difficulty, decreased appetite or weight loss, restlessness, depressed mood, and physical symptoms causing significant discomfort such as shakiness or tremors, sweating, fever, chills, and headaches."

"Marijuana is said to be a fantastic muscle relaxant, and people swear by its ability to lessen tremors in Parkinson's disease. I have also heard of its use quite successfully for fibromyalgia, endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, and most other conditions where the final common pathway is chronic pain," says Peter Grinspoon, MD, writing for the Harvard Health Blog. "Marijuana is also used to manage nausea and weight loss and can be used to treat glaucoma. A highly promising area of research is its use for PTSD in veterans who are returning from combat zones. Medical marijuana is also reported to help patients suffering from pain and wasting syndrome associated with HIV, as well as irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's disease."

The flip side of that coin is that the best arguments for universal legalization is seriously considering the history of those who have TRIED to criminalize it.
Seriously, look at all these fuckers sitting around like Fuck journos all day while they're riding a train started by the worst media fuck ever.

I can't say I disagree with a lot of the research, neither tobacco nor weed is good for you.

Tobacco is sneaky in comparison to weed with its addictive properties. IME it feels organic but it's a substance talking, and can be increasingly insistent subconsciously if you're the least bit hooked when you try to quit. It's easy to ignore this, and frankly those mental effects are scary if you're autistically keeping track of things.

Weed definitely induces that malaise and contentment which is real bad mentally for people who don't have their shit together. It also masks a lot of emotional issues, but the active addictive effects are far less than tobacco. Quitting weed is easy physiologically, the question becomes whether you end up being a raging jackhole without realizing it due to the numerous issues it can mask with use.

That said there's no reason both substances should not be legal, we're still looking for a deleterious impact worse than alcohol, and weed just ain't it.

I trust high drivers 1000% more than I trust drunk drivers (I don't trust drunk drivers barely at all) from probably the most important public policy standpoint (deaths under the influence), and with the advent of safely designed vapes and not-shitty edibles consuming weed is getting safer by the day. That said, keep off it except for parties (assuming "parties" are a good bit less than a 50% of your life situation) until you have your shit together, and even then keep it to moderate levels.

I'd say legalize it but keep it out of the hands of teenagers. It can damage the developing brain and cause an increased risk for schizophrenia in kids who use it heavily. It also reduces ambition and IQ points, so if you're a college professor who uses it recreationally, you can probably get away with smoking it. If you're a street rat or some slumming kid with no self control, you'd do better to avoid it and concentrate on fixing your life instead.

Every stoner I know has lost like 30 IQ points and is obese and has no personality, meanwhile people who smoke a pack a day have 6 pack, chad, etc.
I somehow doubt that most smokers have 6 packs, more like they're emaciated. I've never met a smoker, tobacco or marijuana, who I would consider a chad. Most cigarette smokers I've ever met have most of the above issues, like unwarranted aggression, irritability, apathy, ect.
Edibles are the way to go if you're a stoner though. You will likely have the same cognitive degradation but at least you're not going everywhere smelling putrid.
Mind you this is only with daily use, which means prolonged exposure. I don't doubt that marijuana is addictive in a similar manner to tobacco, but I've heard far, far less about it than I have with tobacco.
White trash is more likely to chew dip or go for the pipe.
Where the fuck would that be? Nobody fucking chews tobacco.
No, but at least they serve an arguably legitimate purpose other than "DUDE I'M HIGH LMAO! XD"
LMAO you're not even getting paid by Big Pharma. Jannies do it for free.

Always had a feeling weed was the route to a Brave New World. Now I am conflicted. Were the people shitty before the weed and the weed made things worse or were people decent and the weed made them retarded?

Then again, at this point, I just want people to shut the fuck up while I go about my business so doping people may be the only solution.

Highly potent THC will fry your brain pretty good if consumed regularly.

From personal experience I very much agree with the critical voices in this thread. Weed is a wonderful thing... If you save if for special occasions. But most people don't have that amount of self control.

Tobacco is evil in its own way but at least it doesn't fuck with your short term memory.

Legalize it all. Continue to criticize the subhuman retards who waste their lives on this shit and live the stoner life. Do I have to think of everything?
this only works if you're also willing to kick all drug users out of their health insurance, otherwise the price for their self-destruction is ultimately paid by the taxpayer (you)

people who don't have their shit together.

that's the key word. if they don't smoke pot they'll use something else, they won't suddenly turn into upstanding productive members of society just because they don't use recreational drugs anymore. lot of people use weed, same way people drink alcohol, but only with the latter people will acknowledge you got issues when you get hammered to the point of passing out every day. turns out everything used excessively is bad but the vast majority of people know moderation is key. the whole MUH WEED MUH POTHEADS wailing gets pretty tiresome, for all intents and purposes alcohol is much worse on an individual and societal level, but good luck with another prohibition.

that's why you make the golden shot free, funerals are not covered by health insurance.
