I'm not sure what the Silent Hill music is classified as (Ambient Rock, I guess?) But what are some bands with a similar sound?

Why does a Silent Hill have music?

Maybe try this project by Akira Yamaoka, the Silent Hill composer? The music is very SH like. The whole album is very weird. Some SH like vocal tracks, some industrial, some SH backdrops with spoken word.

I thought SH 3 OST had some of the best songs on there.

Also, it might be a stretch, but I’m thinking Soundgarden is the closest thing to music like this.

Industrial, trip hop, alt rock, grunge, noise rock...it crosses a lot of varied genres.

Portishead obviously had some influence.

Yamaoka incorporates lots of different genres in the SH soundtracks so you'd really have to categorize each track instead of the entire album

Why does a Silent Hill have music?

For the same reason Eddie can sit around eating pizza at an abandoned bowling alley. How did he get a pizza delivered? Who knows. Maybe Pyramid Head runs a pizza shop when he isn't sexually assaulting legs and stalking pillow fight champions.

Nine Inch Nails is another one. You can really hear the NIN influence in heavier, more abrasive songs.

I would classify Doom 64's music as being this kind of music. Aubrey Hodges doesn't get nearly enough credit for creating such a dark, foreboding soundtrack. This track in particular is my favorite, if only because the distant sound of crying babies freaks me the fuck out when I'm playing the game late at night with the lights turned off.

Extreme necroposting, The instrumental of Carissa's Wierd Ignorant Piece Of Shit resembles a lot of SH2's tone. Especially the ending segment at 2:42.
