Silent Hill

Trigger warnings cheapen horror and darker stories. Even the Mafia demake has a trigger warning despite not even expanding on themes it could have and being a lot more family friendly than the original ending. Can you imagine if Berserk had a trigger warning? We already have that shit with Parental Advisory Explicit Content and ratings. Imagine not being able to handle terrible human beings in a story, and you as a writer feel the need to put TW on it like its some wattpad bullshit.
Ah, "trigger warnings." I'm like "thanks for spoiling a possible shooting/rape/death scene there all because idiots living in a bubble can't cope up with what's happening outside of their fantasy world."

Why did no one say there's a fucking trigger warning when you start the Blooper Hill? :story:
Fuck it, I'm setting everything to the most "modern gameplay standards" options they have, for the full Current Year™ experience.
It could be worse: an option in the settings to make it less spooky (Dead Space remake).

A "viewer discretion is advised" should be enough, but this country is full of litigious faggots.

I didn't know till yesterday that SH4 is on GOG, so I got that. Walter Sullivan gives me Chris or Daniel Larson vibes, right down to having no concept of boundaries.

I see everybody already memory-holed the worst atrocity, Book of Memories.
Book of Memories had an interesting premise. Why they made it into a gear grind dungeon crawler is baffling.

I liked Origins. I might be the only one, but I liked it more than SH3 and SH4

the shadows are borked though and it needs some fixes if you want all hauntings from the ps2.
I though SH4 didn't have shadows? It was all baked lighting. No radio either.

Trigger warnings cheapen horror and darker stories.

I liked it too (I also liked Shattered Memories). Less than 3 (what can I say, Vincent is great) but more than 4 - ghosts gimmick was very annoying.

The story was rather basic. And your character had absolutely no reason to be involved - even Harry in SH1 and Henry in The Room, who are your typical everyman protagonists, had very good reasons to be summoned by the town.

>go in the final boss
>remember in the original if you dont have any ammo before going in, maria kills herself
>try to do this
>realize after dying 3 times maybe they didnt port this

damn
The game generally moved from survival horror to action horror, the bosses now have more complex mechanics and phases and generally overstay their welcome compared to the original.
Eddie was cool but a little too competent for who he's supposed to be.

Was thinking about this, and it reminds me of something I heard about movie trailers. Spoilers in movie trailers are universally derided as far as I can tell, but supposedly they increase ticket sales. The rational being that Joe Public doesn't like surprises, so unless it's M. Night Shama-lama-ding-dong where people go in expecting a big twist, anything that surprises them has a chance to upset them. I find it hard to believe that's true, but it's what I've heard.

I figured as much. It is a dungeon crawler.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the general premise is the character you create gets a book in the mail detailing their life story. They soon discover they can change things in the real world by editing the book, but each time they do they dream of a Silent Hill dungeon.

I never understood the Climax games obsession with the "creepy" mail man.

Having never played the game, I like the initial idea. It would be more interesting immediately if it was a fixed character, and the changes made end up bringing them to Silent Hill. Or maybe the book is stolen and they go after it. This is getting close to fan fiction, but my point is there's a bunch of ways to use that premise, and "dream of dungeon crawls" isn't a particularly strong one.

I apologize in advance if this has already been posted on here since I'm not very active in this thread but modders have already fixed Angela and Maria's faces in the remake.

I don't know if this mod fixes Maria's giant ass head tho but at least Angela doesn't have that weird pudgy face anymore.

The uninspired, washed out, for lack of a better term “soulless” look of the SH2 remake along with the new RE games proves that pure graphical fidelity will never look better than an actual artstyle with effort put behind it. The game looks like shit, it’s not just about the characters being ugly, it’s because it’s made by incompetent people that have no connection or love for the source material, it’s just a paycheck. When I see the remake, I don’t feel anger at it, merely apathy. Konami just sees this as a cashgrab, the devs don’t care, so I won’t care.

Not bad. Maria's definitely improved but Angela still looks too young. She's supposed to look aged beyond 19 due to the shit she's been through. I see they modded back in Maria's old outfit too. Was probably easy since it already exists in the remake.

Thats better since its vague. Funnily enough though original SH2 is the one of the 4 that ditched the violent and disturbing opening.View attachment 6526384

These were never trigger warnings. It was marketing going "FUCK YEAH GAMERS THIS GAME HAS SOME MOTHERFUCKING EDGE TO IT!" I know for certain that is its purpose for Devil May Cry which the original game had started as an incarnation of Resident Evil 4. It makes it cool by Dante doing a kick and then explosions.
These warnings PREDATE "Trigger Warnings." They're the gaming equivalent to TV-MA American TV Shows starting with a "VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED" Warning. When I was a kid and that popped up I got hyped! I was gonna see some shit!

So after seeing more streams on it. I now know why I sorta defended it why it came out. It got a lot of slack from me because it didn't completely shit the bed like most of the REmakes. With that said. It's soulless goyslop. Now like with other remakes, when you search Silent Hill 2 you'll only get returns of the shitty remake.

It's also getting tiresome every faggot attacking the camera angles in the original, like retards did with the REmakes. Every fucking game now looks exactly the same. There's so many areas in SH2 original that are panic inducing since you'll only see James and his flashlight and everything else is complete darkness. Or, you'll be in the hospital and Maria is with you and she just pops into existence when moving from room to room.

The Resident Evil 1 Remake is a masterpiece... if more remakes were like that, I would actually buy them. Part of the reason I don't want a RE0 or Code Veronica X remake... the over the shoulder style will make those games shit.

The art direction is just so fucking strong in that game. I love the original dearly, but it went from boring wallpaper mansion to an atmospheric nightmare. It's the last time the series had frightening zombies. Their rotted appearance and moans are astounding and not the generic lazy moan bullshit of the newer games. Like you would find that zombie in the west hallway that's outside the piano room and it'll just stand there looking at you down the hallway and let out that creepy sick person bellow. Zombies transitioning to room to room I remember scared the fuck outta me.

It sucks Zero's sales killed any notion of getting 2make and 3make under Mikami's direction. I love 4, but I would cut it's head off to get what might have been.

Over the shoulder is so fucking done and I'm tired of hearing it's an "improvement."

BUT ACKCHULLY IT WAS ONLY LIKE THAT BECAUSE OF LIMITATIONS

Suck all of my cock.

Like you can look at these and think "this sucks, and this needs to be the over shoulder action shooter that everything else is." Why would you possibly think this is inferior to the generic fucking goyslop of every game in the series is now? There's zero visual appeal and the RE engine is terrible.

There's nothing inherently wrong with the RE engine or over-the-shoulder action games generally. RE4 wasn't a massive critical and commercial success and incredibly influential on the industry for no reason and I'm consistently impressed by the performance and visual fidelity of RE engine games.

It only becomes a real problem when people start believing it should become the universal standard forever AND retroactively replace any game that didn't use it. That's akin to thinking the Godfather was really good, therefore the Wizard of Oz and Citizen Kane should be re-made as period films about Italian gangsters.
