Is SHf that boring to where you guys have to engage with a mindless 4chan coomer discussing the "censorship" of little girl panties? You know how many untextured/unmodeled upskirts there has been in gaming for the past 15 years? Know how many blatant solid textures beneath skirts there are (GTA IV and V)? Believe me when I say a fuckton, I was a teenager once. Most of the time it's a floating pair of legs because most people don't fucking pay attention and maybe the devs just don't want to model Haley's clitoris under the cloth of the pantsu. It's no different here. Sometimes this site feels like Reddit with how easily threads can be derailed into utter nonsense.

It's a boring chink studio with no experience who did Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster and RE:Verse who boast more about their environment work on SHf than the character models. Unlike DRDR I don't think this was an instance of censorship, it was lazy chink modeling. You can EVEN SEE where the legs are just fucking floating in the screencap, indicating the devs just let her model be a void like in other games when dealing with skirt modeling to save resources. So don't give me this dogshit twitter bait in my goddamn Silent Hill thread where we sperg about better shit.

People are desperate to find anything to bitch about these days. Nothing can be good: It always has to be bad. Don't have a reason? Extract the most bullshit one you can.

This game looks bad but they couldn't even say why for the right reasons. Gook underwear was apparently the nail to hang their hat on

I played about two hours so far, not fond of the limited inventory so far - Six of my eight slots are taken up by healing so I'm having to run back and forth from items to shrines just so I can cash them in.

Hey! Get it right! It's Jap underwear.

I hope they never make or remake any Silent Hill games anymore. Let them rest... in our special place.

People keep saying that there's no connection to the other Silent Hill titles but that's not true, it's actually a pretty big part of the plotline in NG+.

It's the pills. The pills are made with the seeds from a flower non-native to Japan, brought over from overseas in the 1770s. At Shu's house these flowers bloom around a pond in his backyard, these flowers are white trumpets. White trumpet flowers that bloom around bodies of water are known as White Claudia in Silent Hill, they are a mild hallucinogetic with the main draw being euphoria. It's sold to visiting tourists, etc etc etc

In the plot, the day Hinako is informed of her arranged marriage, Shu gives Hinako a box of these pills to help with her tension headaches. In the Coming Home to Roost ending, Hinako becomes addicted to these pills, she self-medicates to deal with her circumstances. When she's in her mid-20s, on her wedding day, she ODs on these and beats the shit out of everyone at the wedding reception (while wearing a wedding dress, no less. Yass kween slay!) with a metal pipe in drug-induced psychosis before stumbling home and killing her parents.

I would literally be content to let algos get good enough to auto-uprez old games instead of some faggy indie dev deciding to create their version of a beloved classic, as if anyone wants it.

Your protag isn't a seasoned fighter or a warrior and so the movesets are limited and your dodge option doesn't exist. They should just bring back tank controls at this point.
Tank controls were stiff, but you’re not supposed to be John Wick, you’re some civilian with a pistol who’s never fired at anything scarier than a carnival prize. The awkwardness communicated danger.

And this is the schism, on one side, you’ve got people who want horror games to actually be tense. On the other side, casuals who just want to mash buttons and strafe. It’s oil and water. You cannot reconcile them, but it hasn't stopped developers from trying to make survival horror all inclusive.

Hilariously, Lisa: The Painful is the better Silent Hill game because every fight there forces the player to really buckle down and win at the skin of their teeth. Obviously, once you reach a point where you can start steamrolling enemies, it still forces you into that survivor mindset as some of the later enemies can still instakill you. That and the mess that is Brad Armstrong and his trauma.

Wasn't expecting a Joyless ending being a requirement for any other ending in F. Or at the very least not take too many damn pills.

The only Silent Hill elements about F is the fog, the monsters, and the formula. The way its handled, the whole Souls angle, it should have been its own title. They could have made it as an urban themed Soulslike with all the forced battles and the monster arena this game likes putting people through. Right down to character leveling. Could have been something new.
It feels like a less original version of Ghostwire tokyo. Ghostwire tokyo at least functions like a pseudo tour guide and its side stories are enjoyable with genuine folk lore even if the primary plot is weak as fuck.

White trumpet flowers that bloom around bodies of water are known as White Claudia in Silent Hill, they are a mild hallucinogetic with the main draw being euphoria. It's sold to visiting tourists, etc etc etc
Very fucking retarded. Silent hill is a supernatural punishment and giving it naturalistic explanations like this undermines the horror. She isn't crafting her own hell she's just having BPD meds. The plant doesn't cause the otherworld it was just one of the many conspiracies in the town leading to its decline and decay in the original anyhow. Sure the cult used it in ceremonies but the otherworld is real and distinct.

My final thoughts on why Silent hill f is bad without even having to play it. tl;dr It's not silent hill.
> silent hill game
> set in not silent hill
It's a mediocre horror-themed souls-lite with "dealing with your inner child" theme and some basic Asian mythology aesthetics (I assume this was meant to be the villain).
It was even less of a Silent Hill game than I expected after seeing first few segments. Even that retarded interactive movie they released a while ago was more rooted in the mythology (the cult was there, and as shown in SH3, the cult can make the otherworld manifest outside of Silent Hill).

I literally already predicted this from the shitty white goblet in the trailer and the notion of the students tripping balls or being drugged against their will just like the events of SH1. But unlike SILENT HILL its an entirely different concept and its like saying the mistaken barbed wire motif from the movie in these dogshit monster designs and fog carryovers make it connected. No you're just doing free damage control. If you read Higurashi you'd know hes just redoing concepts he already did down to the friend group itself. The way the town suffered in SH1 from drug epidemic was a parallel to the literal fucking Cocaine epidemic and general crooked American and Jap drug trade. Just because there's a substance like white claudia and fog won't make this a worthy silent hill entry.

Look at the final boss. None of the monsters have a necessary Fracis Bacon distortion to them which is a missed opportunity. Even 4 had that without the artist.

There is no SILENT HILL without Francis Bacon monsters and environment design to suit them. The environment and otherworld is as much a character as the main cast.

I can't believe most fans still don't notice but just Psych Horror is not the main draw and of SILENT HILL. It isn't the defining factor. The defining factors are the art, music which Akira can't do right anymore (sh soundtracks have been shit and 4 was his last decent work), characters, themes and story. The extra layer is the cult. Yes, SILENT HILL absolutely needs the cult aspect to work. It defined even 2 even though it's not the main focus. Pyamid Head wouldn't EXIST without the historical society painting. Which was resembling the CULT executioners performing a ritual in red hoods.
1000456394.webp
This is what separates the games from anything else. There's really nothing like it in terms of using Francis Bacon and numerous horror works as a backdrop for aesthetics while meaningfully tying it to characters.
1000456397.webp

Silent Hill nowadays would have a basic bitch concept of an alcoholic having actual beer monsters form instead of monsters symbolic of the suffering, desparation and temptation they go through. Beyond that they don't understand how Monsters are even made.

White Claudia influenced aspects of the Hellish otherworld look and feel in 1 and its why there are so many bottles around the segments, with the main theme being Alessa's torment and nightmare seeping into reality as described more clearly in the novelization. In 1 there are 3 layers to the town. Reality, the dream, and Alessa's Nightmare (the otherworld). They overlap.

2 follows a similar idea but with reality itself being a distorted dream or nightmare, with the otherworld being more unique to James and overlaps with Eddie and Angela's delusions.

3 has Heather in a similar role to Alessa in 1, finally carrying the cult's God and as a result reality CAN SHIFT at any moment, making the journey Hell for her. 3 begins with a dream sequence like 1 did but doesn't have much meaning in the game vs the novel.

Most of 4 IS in a dream. A unique dream too, from a dead man who completed a taboo ritual to begin his final ritual and resurrection. Reality itself bends to his will and his victims haunt his dreamscape. The gamrplay sucks but the premise is one to write home about in terms of how it was initially a spinoff but meaningfully tied to the cult and expanded it with the orphanage in the final game. The Otherworld functions as the repeat levels, harder and also with tougher and bloodier grotesque enemies just like the first 3 games. (though in 2 it was just the nurses who visibly got more fucked up in the otherworld).

There is no meaningful transition anymore in the games especially since their influence is polluted with 2006 era Silent Hill logic. Reality shifts without cause other than a retarded Phenomenon now.
There are no bloodier/tougher enemies by the end to spice things up and make a use for the resources you collect. There is no survival horror, there is no horror influence that MAKES a silent hill game what they were. It's gone.

Is it the ship of theseus if they don't even utilize the original parts or is it a pale, botched imitation that resembles another ship instead?

The characters are hardcore stereotypes and the game begins with a typical abusive Jap alcoholic father who beats his wife and daughter. We could have had a unique cast like SIREN 1, with so many diverse outcasts, religious people, teachers and students in the story to fully show off 1960s Japan.

Instead we get basic bitch elements and instead of cutscenes to introduce the characters properly we get story journals like an action adventure game or rpg character bio. This is not SILENT HILL already. Why do you have a journal when SH games always establish characters first and foremost? Laziness. Heather was so expressive, even 4's dull opening cast had more expression than this game does with Cynthia's "favor". The UI is shittier than SH2 remake with no option to turn off the retarded red vignette at low health despite them having low health animations. It's a game for kids, or "everyone", not for adults like us.

If you need a character bio in a "horror" game you've already failed storywise.

Aside from SIREN 1 and 2, BAROQUE is probably the closest in feel to SILENT HILL games may ever get.

The better Silent Hill in a japanese setting already existed, its called Siren.
It even has better level design and showcases an even more rural 60s Japan look to it. (The second "escort" mission with the blind girl and fog and Koi farm comes to mind)
SIREN is way scarier than Silent Hill and this new f game because it's truly foreign horror and was centered around obscure rural mountain cults and forbidden Japanese rituals, twists and corruptions of their concepts similar to what Sekiro did with Buddhism.
SHf fails to capture that, and opts for Jap tropes instead of a unique exploration of their own culture for accessibility to weebs I guess.

The Shiboto are some of the most horrific enemies in horror gaming. More sinister and unnerving than the SH monsters because they are humans corrupted and reborn, they have intelligence and hierarchy. The face scan tech made them unique and delightfully uncanny.
1000456840.webp
This is how you make humans scary. Add their even more horrific insectoid transformation during later parts and you have an added horror that the characters you play can easily become one of them if they simply drunk the corrupted waters. I'd sooner become a George Romero zombie than these ungodly things.

To this day i think its the best game to be a successor to Silent Hill without being the same thing, both the things it does similar and the things it does different are very good. Even the visuals hold up amazingly well, that technique they used for face expressions is outdated compared to modern graphics but adds a lot to the uncanniness

As an aside (perhaps redundant, I have probably sperged on this topic before): you know how people will understandably malign "horror fans?" That goes triple for Silent Hill fans. They're some of the dullest people on Earth. They love a thing, but they have no idea why they love that thing. They fill their heads with encyclopedic wiki "lore" and the details of other people's analyses, and they start taking authoritatively about the plot Rules™️ of Silent Hill, unaware that all the shitty non-Konami SH games are made by people who think like they do. They're the fucking worst.

I'm sure they're wasting internet server space all over the planet right now arguing about Silent Hill f. Not arguing about if it works or not as a (fanfic) Silent Hill game, but arguing about if they got the lore right. ("ACSHUALLY Pyramid Head could show up and it would make sense if you understand the lore, I'm sorry he isn't in the game, he's my favorite.") We should all aspire to be less like these people.
Very fucking retarded. Silent hill is a supernatural punishment
Silent Hill isn't one thing. If the "original team" (I know it had a changing lineup) had kept working on the games, they absolutely would not have made every sequel in the image of SH2... like every dumbass third party afterwards has. (With an exception for Climax and Shattered Memories, which is a mostly original, if not entirely successful, game.) We know this because SH3 and 4 aren't retreads of 2's themes.

The name Siren itself in Japanese was a tease for Japanese fans of Silent Hill due to Japan's autistic language shenanigans. It is quite literally a followup to SH1 in terms of themes. It outdoes SH1 in my opinion by being a unique parallel story where you're forced to explore every inch of levels. I think its pretty good, the time loop being a thing where you are nudged to check more out than you did initially. Some levels give me more tension and actual fear that all games never match. The level where you play as the old man with a rifle coming out of a dark tunnel and have to sneak past the enemies, shrouded in dense fog while obtaining key items around the level made me stressed and genuinely considering for my ammo count. You aren't gonna find ammo willy nilly, which is what survival horror is all about imo. Every shot matters. The school segment is another great example of survival/stealth horror done right, I actually got afraid of being caught and having to hide the little girl to look out for enemies on patrol.

Controversially I think SIREN is one of the best survival horror games out there, but its not very accessible given how many players will be averse to its mechanics, mysteries and puzzles and sadly has a horrible dub with no real way for an undub patch to happen since there aren't subtitles like in 2. It checks every box on what should be done in them. It doesn't rely on action too much, its actually scary, it has an amazing narrative with interesting lore, it has pretty good gameplay even if it has a gimmicky sight jack, the levels are pretty clear on what to do with characters despite puzzles/collectables filtering players... oh and the collectibles actually fucking matter. No resource bloat to worry about; even more rewarding is PROGRESSING THE STORY and breaking the loop. Which plays out like a mystery game almost, and I like that. Horror and Mystery go together well. Lovecraft gets overused but it almost plays out like one of his works.

It's one of the only games where every gunshot lodged into a fucked up flying armed insectoid feels amazing but also intense, and where the puzzles shine bright even if they seem insane. There's nothing like Siren in terms of scale and gameplay sadly (or happily knowing bloodcurse was dogshit and the original 2 games stay special since no dev wants to copy games people whined about)
The only thing I like about SHf so far is the vague fox shrine puzzle on the hardest puzzle difficulty, but even that's not as much of a puzzle and can be exploited as a guessing game. Give me more obscure and desperate outside-the-box puzzles SIREN had.

I concur about Siren the sightjacking mechanic forces you to overcome your fear by showing just how close to discovery you are while giving you all the information you need to overcome the obstacle.

It seems there's plenty to dislike about SHf, but as nearly all of the issues are combat-related it only becomes obvious when actually playing the game. Of course, some people are too busy posting on twitter to ever do that much...

That's interesting to learn and seems obvious now that's you've said it.

And it's not surprising as the game is filled with tons of little references to SH, too. Off the top of my head, you've got the radio (the ones you drop in the well) that's, IIRC, identical to the one from Silent Hill 2. The elementary school has a similar (identical?) layout to the one in Silent Hill (though arguably that's due to how classrooms tend to be constructed in Japan). And the UFO stuff seems like a reference to SH's obsession with UFOs. (But, yeah, shared themes.)

I think I got right to the end of Siren 2 but never finished it for some reason. I should restart it.
Lovecraft gets overused but it almost plays out like one of his works.
Yes! Siren is the most successfully Lovecraftian game I've played. (Well, maybe behind Eternal Darkness, though that's an actual Lovecraft pastiche.) I thought the same thing when I played i years ago.
There's nothing like Siren in terms of scale and gameplay sadly (or happily knowing bloodcurse was dogshit and the original 2 games stay special since no dev wants to copy games people whined about)
There's Cry of Fear. I never got too far into it, but it clones the sight-jacking system and is well-regarded by many people.

What made Blood Curse bad? I have always wanted to play it.
