Simulated Reality: The last invention by man? - Why go out when you can plug in?

Was discussing with a friend how I felt that if virtual reality got to the point where it were completely immersive and indistinguishable from life that it would be the last great invention by man. If Matrix quality VR became obtainable by the masses then there would be no point for any kind of quality interaction in the real world. Work enough to keep your lights on and your body fed and go home and plug in. I think new inventions for the betterment of mankind will be directly related to the quality of the VR and usage of it .I know this is absolutely not a novel concept just wanted to hear some thoughts on it.

If it's completely indistinguishable from real life then you might invent something while in VR.
I say "indistinguishable" meaning it can completely mimic your senses. That doesn't mean it has to follow the laws of reality. In a simulated world where you can have anything at your beck and call and do anything youd like, what does invention mean?

Honestly Vr kinda terrifies the fuck out of me. When Vr gets too good and people figure out how to trick the brain into perceiving time slower corrupt governments could and will use vr to torture people for what would feel like a literal eternity

"I spent 24 hours in I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream VR and THIS happened!"

If we r able to hack unto the brain that effectively than VR would be kinda redundant. Why go through the work of experiencing something (even simulated) when you can make yourself feel like youre having the time of your life staring at a ceiling fan?

Yeah once it gets to that point I doubt we'll even have governments as we know them. Just the machine overlords keeping all the pod people alive.

Thats probably the endgame for the idea of virtual reality. Lets be honest the engineers that have been working on vr for the last few decades just want to make their own heaven with 72 virgins they can fuck for the rest of what feels like an eternity

You mean a reality cartoon.

I believe, or rather, I think it's possible that Chris is like a bit right on this and cartoons are indeed real, our world exists as a cartoon in another world and one can visit "toonworlds" via consciousness-expanding substances or, uh, suicide. Just combine the simulation hypothesis with the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, and modal realism. At least from a philosophical perspective and hypothetically, it becomes possible.

Imagine Chris's VR world. Or don't rather, we've already seen exactly what it would be. Wonder if he'd keep it as shittely drawn er...rendered?

After Chris' premature death due to his not exactly healthy lifestyle, the simulators of our universe may respawn him in another world, one based on CWCville and Sonichu comics, just to see how he'll act in his dreamworld. For sure, he would still remain a pathetic loser and lolcow even in his own wishfullfillment fantasy, because even there, Chris would still be Chris - and that equals an automatic failure in every situation or world imaginable.

Eh, I doubt it. I'm sure that as soon as we invent VR the levels of The Matrix and eXisTENZ, nature and science is just waiting to fuck it all up with the spanner in the works known as "unanticipated side effects". I'm also not just talking about addiction to VR either, I'm talking about something going absolutely fucky with the interfacing and human biology and probably causing effects akin to the uncanny valley or resultant subconscious ennui as an after effect that the body builds up after knowing that it's being duped.

Do you all really believe that matrix would be better than life and not controlled by corporates trying to make a buck with real life microtransactions and vip stuff essentially defeating a purpose of it?

I personally think that overly realistic VR will be dangerous for our societies in general.

There are already a huge crop of people who would be happy to just plug in and stay in, I've known a few of these types and personally aside from a very limited output into society they really don't contribute anything.

This isn't necessarily good for society or civic society, but will become even worse when it becomes hyper realistic as people will spend most of their actual lives in a virtual world.

The side effect of this will be that people will replace reality for a superficial reality. It doesn't actually stop them from existing in reality. So instead of maybe assessing the situation and making their lives better, they will live for this ersatz sort of life and by the time the realization might come that a change is needed it will be too late for them to do anything.

It's also going to lead to a myriad of health issues, obesity, early death, mental health issues, imagine putting a schitzo in a VR machine? They will lose it completely.

That said there is gonna be money to be made, so it will happen. The two biggest drivers are going to be porn and entertainment.

Not only that, but SR that "hacks" directly in to your brain could allow you to be controlled* in a way you're unaware of it.

*(of course "tech incubators" like Steve Hoffman of Silicon Valley are all too eager to develop such technology anyway)
Fuck Orwell's future is pretty optimistic compared to ours. Atleast his future wasn't controlled by lispy voiced faggots

I simultaneously love the idea of completely immersive VR and am also terrified by it.

But really, reality seems to be pretty fucked these days, maybe it's a good thing that we'd create a better version of it.

People always mention The Matrix when talking about this idea, but I also think of eXisTENZ, what an underrated movie that is.

What if that was the plan by scummy assholes running the show all along: make the real world so shitty that people would retreat into VR - a realm where one can be easily completely controlled?

Can you really be completely controlled though? It seems to me the one constant about digital platforms is that they can always be hacked, I'd dare say the average person would have far more power in a cyberspace than meatspace.
