Not only Islam but the Holy Quran itself should be “Sinicized.” This was the message Islamic clergy from Hunan heard from the United Front bureaucrats and the government-controlled China Islamic Association, which summoned them to Beijing for a course that started on October 13.

Not only there are more than 100,000 Hui Muslims in Hunan. There is also a Uyghur minority there, and Uyghur and Hui Muslims intermarry, making the situation of local Islam worthy of a particularly strict surveillance by the authorities.

The Fourth Division of the 12th Bureau of the Central United Front Work Department hosted the Beijing gathering, together with some of the highest national bureaucrats of China Islamic Association, including Vice President Mu Kefa.

Mu welcomed the trainees, stating that the training will focus on studying the spirit of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CCP Central Committee and General Secretary Xi Jinping’s views on religious work. The goal includes promoting the Sinicization of Islam and teaching the trainees “interpretive skills” for dealing with the Holy Quran.

They should preach “the Scriptures interpreted according to the New Era,” a Xi Jinping’s favorite slogan, so that they will be put at the service of “political awareness” and “actively guide Islam to adapt to socialist society.”

“Sinicization” does not mean adapting the Holy Quran and Islam to Chinese traditions but to the principles of a “socialist society” and Xi Jinping’s so-called “Marxism with Chinese characteristics for the rejuvenation of the country in the New Era.”

A report indicates that the training course lasts for a week and involves thirty-eight Islamic clergy from different cities across Hunan Province.
