I thought the first one looked okay until I read the included text. Just why? And those last ones don't look like they're from Digimon in the slightest. Even as OCs, the style and design is just not recogniseably Digimon, no goggles on any of them for one thing. They look like a rejected magical girl squad.

(He really likes to emphasize the fact that Shantae is 16, even though her age is vague/never mentioned in the games and vague in the "confirmation tweet" about it.
Let's also not forget the fact that this is a fantasy video game.)

Now you tell me, which of these looks more like a 16 year old girl?

The right one, obviously!
(God, the posing on the right is so terrible, this bitch should be falling over. It's fucking crazy how the "artist" legitimately missed the point that Shantae is in the middle of a dance pose in the original art, and instead drew her in such an awkward, unbalanced, unnatural pose. Bitch can't even draw hands! Had to turn them over so they wouldn't have to draw the palms.)
The only male gaze he corrected is his own. He fapped to this cute genie too many times so he "redesigned" her for atonement.

Kind of love how the original is in an appealing, fluid pose and the redesign is so stiff and amateurish. Not to mention the stubby legs. #dwarfshantae2019

Now if that amazing bout of artistry wasn't enough for you, here's a redesign of Shantae's rival, Risky Boots.

Yup, just completely nullify her skull aesthetic. After all, we wouldn't want to be "horny" here!
Vibrant color schemes and belts are sexist!
And of course, give her a fatter face and a fatter body. Skinniness, again, is the devil and should never be seen in athletic characters like a pirate captain who practically lives to steal shit and fight the protag, or, as mentioned before, a belly dancing adventurer.
Also, "big sleeves for drama". What the fuck?
And again, which would you imagine would be the rough and tumbling arabian pirate captain who captures the hearts of onlookers?

It's so blatantly fucking obvious that the "artist" here has never played any of the games. Maybe they saw Shantae on some fucking yuri hentai site and decided to latch onto it or some shit, because, when you get down to brass tacks, none of this shit matches up with the games.
All this redesigning and he can't be arsed to not trace her hand.

Also, this is the sloppy handwriting of a creepy sped.

Now ask yourself, why would someone be so averse to seeing sexy, busty women in video games? To the point where they have to redesign them to have vastly less attractive features?
Well....

Would you look at that?
A snapchat filter using tranny feeling insecure when they see naturally busty girls in video games. Color me surprised.
Look at that five o clock shadow.
(the rest of this person's pics are your basic, easily shoop-able bathroom mirror ass-waving pics. I will save you the pain of looking at them. Seriously, 98% of his pics are just him showing off his silicone filled ass in skinny jeans and trying to look like a teenage girl on instagram.)

Thank God now wlws have something to jerk off to??? What's the message here? Because what I am getting is it doesn't matter how you draw a character someone will always find a way to jerk of to and sexualize them.

Remember how when the designs first leaked they screeched "UGH SHE'S A TEENAGER WHY DO YOU WANT TO SEXUALIZE HER SO BAD YOU PEDOPHILES" at anyone who didn't like the redesign? Guess her being a teenager doesn't matter now, not with the lesbian fans and showrunners thirsting after her.

Rules for thee and not for me, I guess.

Eh, the Catra/Scorpia comic isn't too bad. The rest, though... ugh.

Worst thing is, a majority of the characters look underage(like 15(?)). But hey, a majority of Stevenson's fans *are* those middle school soft-boys.

Late so I'll mention it anyways.
The #notjustadrawing is just stupid because instead of people trying to give people an understanding of how art can be interpreted and used for good and bad, people turned it into "porn=bad" which inherently isn't even true. Are there some disgusting porn out there? Hell yeah. Are there some disgusting predators who take advantage of others through the internet. Hell. Fucking. Yeah. But instead of you know, blaming the people that took advantage of them to begin with and trying to help others avoid that? All of these stories seem to boil down to meeting some creep on the internet and not being given the internet safety talk.

The reason you get predators grooming people to begin with online is because it's THAT easy and there WILL ALWAYS be someone vulnerable. There's no grand super-vision on the internet and it's even harder to track in private chats unless you have direct contact. That and many of these predators KNOW exactly what they are doing. This is especially harder to track if you're a clueless parent who doesn't monitor their kid and what they see online. The sad reality is that these people would exist no matter how much porn is out there. No matter how much squick is out there. As long as people choose to give in to their desires, it will continue to happen.

I'm not going to blame the people who did get groomed into it because it's messed up and I sincerely hope they get help. But time and time again this hurts the art community because instead of telling others to be aware that the internet is not a safe place and to not make the same mistakes, these people start rallies against artists who don't deserve it. There are so many cases in which a slightly younger-looking anime girl is considered "child porn" despite the fact it's just the style and that they're clearly over 18. All this is going to do is cause people to get up and arms over NOTHING. No predator was stopped via this method. But you know what does help? Block and report.

As for the redesigns, the reason the ones above don't work is because they lack any sort of personality. They covered up their skin, which fine, let's say you wanted to do that, but then you make them into essentially the same squarish blobs. No distinct silhouettes and the color palette is muted make them even harder to start out against the crowd. It really is true with these characters. Once you see one poorly colored orange-skinned character, you've seen them all.

Can someone explain the plaster thing to me? Why do so many of these characters have plasters on them?

"bandaids" for Americans and Canadians, sometimes in the heat of the incredulous gawking I do on these boards I forget to weed out the less well known terms I grew up with in BadteethandQueensandTea land.

So, what's with the bandaids they seem to stick all over their characters?
To make them look tougher I guess? Like they're constantly fighting or doing some sort of physical activity that has them getting hurt a lot.

I see that as "weak" personally, and I wouldn't want to know them at all!

Jokes on them, i find women in full plate armor particularly gorgeous. I will take Hilde from Soul Calibur any day rather than Ivy.

In this case i think it's to make them appear less feminine and tomboyish by comparison. it may have started with Maylene from Pokemon pear/diamond/platinum, which was quite iconic as the first female fighting type gym leader.

Bandajds are used in some Japanese fashion subcultures as cute accessories, maybe because they give an otherwise very cute, colorful, frilly outfit some variation and can look tough on a tomboyish look or just round out a more macabre one, but those usually do look cute.

In that kind of art, they're overused and while probably meant to give the same vibe as they do in fashion, they just look like a toddler got hold of the medicine cabinet.

Nah, it’s way older. For example see colorful bandaids on Patty O’Green from the original 80’s Rainbow Brite.

But it’s good to remember that this way to show personality predates bandaids. In many older drawings the same idea was shown by having patches on knees of the pants (actually Patty has this too on her shoes) It’s pretty true to life because some kids get hurt or mess up their clothes pretty regularly because they are naturally very active and unafraid.
