Ugh, is Hazel going to be the new Jeanne d'Arc of SJW art??
What bothers me about a lot of these is that fat people, unibrows, etc. aren't necessarily ugly, but all these artists draw these characters in such unappealing ways? Like, i'm not a fan of Steven Universe (and the art of the actual show I consider not... that pretty), but when I look at the GORGEOUS fanart produced by many artists, that just proves to me that you can be body positive without making your characters look atrocious.
There are so many drawings of f.e. Amethyst and Rozequartz, where they are still fat/have their usual features, but look very beautiful nevertheless. (This also means I had to dig through the... other fanart that is to be expected from a show targeted at such an audience)
Some examples where they sticked to the canon bodies, yet they look pretty nevertheless:
I also never understood the logic applied by ppl like Destiny Moon and the likes where they say they draw f.e. hairy women to feel good about themselves. Like, ngl, my BMI is a bit too high and I don't feel 'empowered' in any way when I see an ugly drawing of some fat chick with her belly hanging out and stretch marks. What part of 'YOU LOOK LIKE THIS UWU' is supposed to make me feel good?? I'd much rather see a character that is f.e. chubby, or has a big nose, unibrow, whatever, that still look nice despite that flaw. That is the message that I want to see, that you can look good even when you're 'beauty' is unconventional.
Movies like into the Spiderverse proove that you can have a diverse cast w/ several more unlikely features (f.e. Gwen's tooth gap or Peter's broken nose or the fact that he's chubby) w/o it looking bad or out of place. That you don't have to make these creative decisions at the expense of good character designs.<
Edit: Also a lot of people use the argument of 'realism' to force diversity into people their work/stories but I can assure you I have never seen someone as fat as some characters in these threads. Idk how bad the obesity rate is in other countries and I heard it's higher in the US, but is it really??? that bad???
Edit 2: idk how to describe this sensation but am I the only one who has like this feeling that if art could have a specific odor, Destiny Moon's art would smell like.... really bad
