I think it's because vitigilio was considered a flaw or a defect (even by the black community) because their skin wasn't one nice uniform color. Even if it's fairly rare.
And like every rare or common physical flaw, tumblr's gotta make it desirable and fetishize that shit straight to Hell.

I find Tumblr's obsession with vitiligo interesting, especially since they almost entirely depict black people with it (although, to be fair, it is harder to notice on lighter skintones) yet they shy away from portraying any character with albinism even though the condition is quite common in Sub-Saharan / East Africa aka ~beautiful peeooooseeesss~

I think race bending is somewhat worse when it's from a book. Books generally don't have pictures so it messes with our perceptions of what the characters look like. I have no idea who any of these characters are, and I read Lord of the Flies.
Wouldn't excluding piggy be fatphobic though?

It's probably because albinos are cliche as fuck in stories now (see: out of vogue for tumblr) and so damn close to being white oppressors due to their lack of precious, precious melanin.

The weird race bending is pretty par the course for tumblr, but looking up the LOTF tag on tumblr - it's pretty gross the amount of grown ass women talking about how they'd like to jump these kids bones - usually talking about the films actors which adds another layer of "ick" for me.
Really, really surprised I've only seen one person on tumblr point out how fucked up that is.

Not surprising, tumblr is so salty about its terrible headcanons/shipping that it is dying of thirst and thirsty for all the wrong things. Although I have seen tumblrites complaining about people aging up child characters for the sake of shipping and porn in fandoms so maybe there's hope that more people will call the LoF creeps on their this-close-to-pedo shit.

In order for them to depict albinism correctly in their work, they'd have to rely on what could be considered some stereotypes of pocs such as africans with the condition to get the point across.
You know, since they don't know how to just draw a character and say they're albino. Everything has to be obviously "(insert race here) coded".
