Even if these were the issues, the complaints don't really hold water because you have more control over the looks, it just doesn't come all in at once. I think they made it like this so you actually get started with the game right away rather than get stucked at character creation. Plus this way they can reward the players with customation options for getting further along with the game and have nice standard looks for marketing, anime and manga.
