I'm struggling to understand the logistics of fat squids. They'd be too heavy to swim very fast, possibly too fat for ink rails, and they'd be way easier to hit. They'd collapse from exhaustion within 30 seconds.

Well we could go with interpretation that the artist likely will find insulting but makes sense.

It's a group of fat kids that want to get in shape so got involved in sports. Naturally they aren't there yet and can't really win but they find the competition motivational and more fun than exercising just for exercising sake.
