Oh that's interesting that actually adds on top of what I was thinking, I always thought it was because she's such a sweet, shy innocent little pony who can do no wrong, and that's how they view themselves, on top of her also being a very weak pony in general. They relate the most to the "weak and shy" pony even though they're far from that. Also because she's the most innocent she makes the most sense for their degeneracy, since they love the idea of innocence being destroyed. Also I feel like her hair style would remind them of how they look, since one of the main ways they tend to style their hair is a swept bangs look to obscure their massive foreheads.
