A bit of a misconception. Yes, the creators made the Vocaloids so they can be whoever they want. However that's usually so the producers who USE the system are able to use the characters to tell stories. Each Vocaloids has a base design but it's only for appeal, really. Japan loves their mascots. I can tell you that.

I honestly don't have a huge problem with racebeding Vocaloids. It's been done before pretty well. But of course these people make it into a political statement about how you are xxxphobic because you don't like their headcanons.

And to add onto that it comes to a point in which the Vocaloids are so unnoticeable that you can barely recognize them. At that point just make your own characters. You don't own the Vocaloids the same way you own an OC. That's not how it works obviously. But to these artists it doesn't seem to make much of a difference.

I actually think it's fun when these people flock to Vocaloid. You know how so many of them bitch about how they could do better than the official writers? Here, the whole point is that there's no canon, no official materials, and the ball is in your court to make something that will appeal to someone. Surprise, surprise; people pay attention to projects with effort in them and not "uhh, what if Miku was black and trans".

Little change of topic. Yeah, no character is prone to uglyfication. But at the same time there was many conversations about how some tumblr users loves to make woman ugly, because pretty ones are problematic and always made with horny guys in mind and at the same time they draw pretty anime guys or yaoi.
I saw those Dragon Age fanarts and thought about it immidiately. It's artist's player character paired with Cullen and you can't notice how differently they are drawn.

Technically art is really good, too good for this thread.
It's not as jarring as changing existing characters, because it's OC, but I don't get why artist choose to make their character so... unappealing, manly and tumblrish while drawing Cullen attractive. Tumblr people often complain when average man in sitcoms has pretty wife (and blown this 2000s trend out of proportion), but opposite is ok. And those average man are just average, sometimes fat, but not made ugly on purpose. You can have darker skinned a bit chubby elf girl and make her cute.

She looks like she doesn't have a torso in the second pic.

The proportions of the people look so off, and with the dead eye stare, it looks creepy. I don’t understand how someone can make something like this and want to post it. Then again, it’s Tumblr and any opportunity to virtue signal is used.
