Long post, but I think I know where tumblr's uglification art trend at least partially came from.

Back when the homestuck fandom was at its biggest on tumblr around 2010, pretty much all fanart of the characters was typical normal looking fanart that made all of the characters look cute/attractive. There was one specific artist named Phemiec who started something called 'uglystuck', drawing characters looking deliberately ugly and particularly making the trolls look like actual aliens or what you'd expect a 'troll' to look like.

They look ugly and nothing like they look in canon, but that's the point. Instead of trying to say that these versions of the characters were actually beautiful and you're a racist/ableist/whatever if you don't find them beautiful, she wanted them to look like grotesque caricatures to go against the popular anime style art of most homestuck art at the time.

This whole spiel sounds like everyone in this thread crying about people hating their 'diverse and daring' art nowadays, but it was actually a controversial opinion in 2011 when everyone drew the same anime or disney knockoff fanart. I think the key difference here is she acknowledges that her art pushes these features to their "extremes" rather than trying to be realistic, and she wants it to provoke a disgusted reaction.

What I think happened is that people took the wrong idea from what she was doing and started equating diversity to these purposefully extremely exaggerated over the top features. So now everyone's drawing hairy fat scarred people but without the intentional gross-out factor and saying 'but that's how real people look!', when her art was meant to be parodying and caricatured.

I could definitely see that being a possible origin. Though it looks like one major difference between Phemeic and current Tumblr art is that Phemiec looks like she knows what the fuck she's doing when making caricatures so while the characters look ugly, they're still good character designs.

Another thing I also suspect happened is that this was also maybe a continuation of the push-back against Mary Sue Donut Steels that began on DeviantArt circa 2008-ish. It was super common for teenage girls to make self-insert characters that were like 6 feet tall with double ds buy only weighing 90 lbs, or online avatars that were meant to literally be the users despite said users typically being chubby teenagers. There was of course a counter trend of people who made fun of such OCs and artist avatars for being unrealistic or being a total lie, and then during early Tumblr (also 2011-ish I think) there were a lot of feminists claiming that those kinds of DA characters were tools of the patriarchy oppressing women with unrealistic beauty standards. I wouldn't be surprised if that lead to a lot of people deciding to be "subversive" and make their avatars/self-inserts more true to how they really look, but because Tumblrinas were/are still insecure teenage girls they still want people to think those body types are just as attractive as the big-boobed anime-style OCs.

I don’t think the reasoning for these ugly styles is really that deep, tbh. From what I observed, it’s the fact that people on tumblr are drawing characters to look like them: fat and unattractive, and if you don’t like this or think it isn’t accurate then you are literally an everythingphobe. Once this started gaining traction, it was suddenly a race to the top of the diversity ladder to fill your art with as many possible minorities as possible to gain as much attention and “progressive points” as you could. As this went on, beginning artists saw this happening and went straight for also copying these styles, which has now evolved into people drawing a character as fuck ugly as possible, but if they’re a race that isn’t white, it doesn’t matter if their art looks like the most offensive caricature imaginable, they must not be spoken against.

You’d think that since they bothered to make this whole stupid comic, they’d be aware that the women don’t have to keep covering themselves in the privacy of their own home, as they’re not in public with unrelated men around.

Because the people who makes these things don't know someone who is Muslim or create the weird fantasy by fetishizing them.

If they actually met someone who is Muslim they would realize being gay is x10 worse for them and that the dating pool is small. They will most likely date outside of their race to compensate for that because believe it or not "POCs" are more likely to be homophobic.

This is because a lot of these people come from a place in which a dominant religion is present. Whether it be Christanity, Islam, Catholicism, etc. And many times, these people have parents or neighbors who would rather have you dead and disown you than let you come out as being openly gay. In the US, I'd argue it's not as bad, but you still have that problem in the Muslim/Black community.

I guess these comics are to show how empowering this is. And honestly if this is what a person chooses to wear( choice is the key here) fine. But the fact that comic shows them in-doors with the hijab on proves to me that the artist doesn't understand jack about anything. That these people are so closeted in their homes that they can't even understand or want to understand other people without it being some agenda pushing nonsense.

Way to go to ignore the actual dangers lesbian Muslims face. Staring is rude, yeah, but I doubt it's worse than being murdered.

90% of ugly sjw art isn't even "well designed ugly", it's mostly shitty art, like you would see on deviantart. Instead of asking "why people draw ugly?" i would just assume most of them do simply because they're bad artists.

I think the purpose is the opposite. Most tumblrites dont draw bad sjw art, they draw sjw art because they're bad. How do you get "fame" on tumblr while being a mediocre artist? You pander to social justice. If you can't be good at least you can be #woke. And besides, if anyone says you're shit, you can just call them racist/transphobic or whatever. It's a win-win.

(this is just pov tho)

It reminds me of the time someone tried to earn brownie points by drawing a Muslim magical girl with a short skirt and was immediately BTFO'd by an actual Muslim woman saying that shit would never fly.

I think the "ugly" trend was just the Homestuck's fandom playing a game of trying to have the most diverse headcanons possible, to the point of contradicting canon, where it was implied or outright said that Dave and Bro were white. This was also around the time drawing "Homestuck noses" was starting to get heavily mocked.

I'd also like to give March Eridan a special mention, something that reached memetic status and was drawn by notorious kinkster IPGD.
