It's safe to say it's a form of projection. No normal person says "This character must be X or else it's bad/can't relate to it so I must change the character so it doesn't make me feel uncomfortable!". It's clear these people have issues with their own racial identity and instead of realizing they do...people overcompensate and project it onto others including fictional characters.
So instead of seeking the media they wish to have (making their own works, supporting creators lead by x team, etc.) social media makes it so easy to connect with creators, shame them for their interests/likes, and force them to hand you your crappy, recolored, un-inspired, "representation" on a silver platter. No need to put in the time and effort or even search your own country's history or potential history. These people beg BECAUSE they see it works and that people DO cave in to not be labeled a racist. That's why we get stuff like this. It's so easy to just change a skin color of an established character and receive internet clout by people who support this crap. If black ariel has taught me anything never underestimate how many desperate people there are to receive internet clout for something so idiotic. We will NEVER get good original characters if these people continue with this crap. Companies will just eat it up and play the racism card as an excuse.
These are the same people who get mad when you critique their artwork because it's "unsolicited" on a PUBLIC platform, but I guess taking shots at big creators without their permission is a-okay. Remember, you can draw whatever you want unless it's a slightly muted color palette, then you're racist, even if you have a limited experience that can be improved...Or a big-breasted woman, because you're sexist...even though many women like sexy characters too...Or an exaggerated style (I don't like) because it's somehow also sexist...Or drawing other minorities because it's only THOSE minorities that are able to draw those characters. Then you're just screwed all around.
Twitter is full of people looking for internet clout so I'm not surprised by the likes.

This is a permanent gripe i have with all Tumblr artists that make Persona 5 fanart: Why is Haru always fat? They usually make her chubby or outright landwhale when she's just average. What's the fucking deal with make her fat?
Also, that Joker is so horrible it makes me cry. It's like a horribly poor attempt of making an emo kid.

The simplified answer is that it’s insanely popular, in Japan especially, with manga sales that rival the likes of other cultural phenomena like Dragon Ball or Superman. And with that level of popularity comes these “_ critical” types who really just want to complain.
That and the fact that One Piece makes drag queen jokes and refuses to cater to shippers of any variety might have something to do with it.

I think I had to do some triple-takes here. I can barely recognize any of these characters. They BARELY look anything like the source material. What happened to Ryuji's face? It's like they wanted to genderswap him and then changed their mind halfway through.
Also why is it okay to turn a white/asian character black but not the other way around? Seems pretty racist either way.
