I believe the fucked up design shown at AniExpo 2015 was a result of miscommunication about what design was to be used (PowerFX is a small Swedish group, Yamaha is Japanese obviously, the project lead was American), so the "whitewashing" was likely unintentional and just meant to have something to present to Yamaha. That said, I don't think RUBY's final design is bad, but it's here because of angry emails and #SaveRuby. IIRC some people just thought the former design was plain ugly and not explicitly racist.

Funny enough, I was thinking about how Japanese people perceive Westerners on Twitter lately. It's not fair that the extremely vocal minority get the attention on the Japanese side of Twitter and they think that all Westerners are like them when in fact, even we hate them! If the Japanese are doing stuff in their own circle, leave them alone! What they find acceptable is different to us. It's funny that SJWs like to complain about white people interfering with other countries (colonisers, for instance) and messing with their culture but they're allowed to dictate to the Japanese what they're permitted to post.
I think it's because of this that the creator of Love Hina elevated a request to the Japanese Parliament to create an institution that would protect japanese works and creators from westerners. I think people race bend Miku because for simple reason of she's the only one that is mainstream. Vocaloids in general aren't that mainstream even in geek culture but Miku is. People have seen her in memes, jokes and cosplays, visually people recognize her even if they don't know where she is from. She has a look that can be modified quite alot and still stay recognizable. Miku is quite iconic and famous but other vocaloids are very niche, therefore having a black vocaloid isn't good enough and actually any not-Miku vocaloid is meaningless. They want the famous one to turn to their side and since they know nothing about Miku beyond her looks they change those looks to their message.
It's quite sad really. As someone who lives in the Southeast of Asia, I love how good anime can be. A lot of the things that appeal to the Japanese appeal to us too.
