Slaves: British punk band change name to Soft Play after criticism

British punk band Slaves have changed their name, saying it "doesn't represent who we are as people or what our music stands for any longer".

The duo, who have had three UK top 10 albums and a Mercury Prize nomination, will now be known as Soft Play.

They said their original name "was intended solely as a reference to the grind of day-to-day life".

A statement added: "We want to sincerely apologise to anyone we've offended."

The name caused controversy when the group made their breakthrough in 2014/15, with The Fader publishing an article headlined: "Why Would A Band Of White Dudes Name Themselves Slaves?"

The Kent band defended their choice at the time, posting a statement explaining that they had been "working tedious 9-5 jobs when we started playing together, stacking shelves and mopping floors".

They said: "Our name and music is aimed at being a slave to day-to-day life and routine. It is a metaphorical use of the word...

"Cease Fire and Wishing Well are the first two tracks we ever wrote, they address people addicted to smoking and the struggle of the day-to-day rat race: 'It doesn't matter if they're taken because they'll take you'."

Now, they are returning after a three-year break and have put out a new statement saying: "As younger men, we responded to criticism of the name from a place of fear and defensiveness.
"Feeling backed into a corner, our own pride caused us to fight for a name we weren't even sure we wanted any more. It felt at times as if our band name had defined us and we were scared of what might happen if we changed it.

"However, we now recognise that our original intent doesn't change the fact that the name Slaves is an issue. In this day and age we believe it is very important that people change and make improvements no matter how far down the line they are."

I was looking through Reddit to see if there was any salt to mine, surprisingly, most I found was pretty based. Link to the thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAc...sorship_slaves_british_punk_band_change_name/

I'm not familiar with the KotakuInAction or really understand how the fuck reddit works, however, most of the comments in here echo my exact sentiment as it relates to the situation.

Anal Cunt did an entire album called Picnic of Love, featuring tracks such as "I Respect Your Feelings as a Woman and a Friend" which is all acoustic and gay as fuck just to be ironic. (The rest of their music is mostly shamelessly offensive noisegrind, which sucks talent-wise but I still enjoy for the pure sadism of making other people listen to it involuntarily)
Fun fact: for that album, they changed their name to A.C. and refused to explain it. Did a tour of all that faggy music. Got some (who knows like 20) legit fans who liked their really gay music.

Informed them of their next tour, where they turned up to play their next album "It Just Gets Worse". They opened with "Domestic Violence Is Really Really Really Funny", and threw chairs at the audience, chasing them out.

Their next single was called "I'm Glad Jazz Faggots Don't Like Us Any More".

I always assumed AxCx/A.C. was just the name they went by to avoid being blacklisted by stores who didn't want "Anal Cunt" plainly visible on their shelves. The truth is much funnier. Seth Putnam was a pretty epic troll.

That's true as well, but they went all out being only called A.C. for that tour. Probably told the hippies it stood for All Creatures or something.

Nothing says punk, more than doing what they tell you. What makes me chuckle a bit is that if euronymous was still alive i wounder if he would have gone along with this horse shit or not. I know punks are different than what Mayhem was, but i would have like to see his reaction to clown world.

Wait what? Europeans can’t use the word slaves because apparently Europeans have never been enslaved? I know the twitter NPC hive mind is made up of dribbling retards, but sometimes it really hits you how the twitter hive mind is made up of dribbling retards.

They’re not the first band to cuck like this. British Sea Power dropped ‘British’ from their name, because the word Britain is offensive or something.

Probably would've had Dead bleed all over his pants for him so it looked like he cut his own dick off, and maybe thrown a severed animal dick into the audience for good measure. Perhaps dress in drag on stage while also sporting beard and armpit hair to highlight how disturbing this all is. No way those wonderful maniacs would have taken all this troon bullshit lying down. They would have had something good up their sleeves, I'm sure.
